Position Summary: The Intake Associate is responsible for screening and assessing an animal’s suitability for impound with the intent that the animal will be able to be adopted in a reasonable amount of time, by using multiple methods of testing to aid in making their decision about impounding said animal.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Evaluate animals for impound by temperament testing, assessing animals for adoptability, the animals overall health and determining rehabilitation needs.
- Performing blood draws on both felines and canines for required testing upon intake.
- Administering necessary vaccination(s) and preventatives due upon intake.
- Keeping up with emails from the public wanting to surrender animals, calling people that were placed on a waiting list and scheduling appointments for an impound assessment.
- Impounds animals in accordance with Humane Society Policies and Procedures and inputs the appropriate data into the Shelter Manager database.
- Helps oversee and coordinate the evaluation and transfer of adoptable animals from Animal Services and/or any other animal rescue/shelter(s).
- Helps evaluate and choose animals that need foster care then communicates that need to the Foster Manager and Medical Services Manager.
- Prepares Dog & Cat Intake rooms in the morning by cleaning and disinfecting both rooms, as well as ensuring all supplies are restocked and ready for the day (i.e., syringes, needles, microchips, vaccines, paperwork and folders).
- Cleans and disinfects both the Dog & Cat Intake rooms at the end of the day.
- Assist medical staff by administering vaccination(s), medications, and/or assisting with restraint of animals, if assistance is needed.
- Communicate with the medical staff via Sick Cards for animals that have any form of health concern(s) found upon intake.
- Communicating with the grooming staff about animals that need any necessary grooming found upon intake.
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of animal health, animal welfare, breed behavior and assessment.
- Skills in customer service and dealing with a variety of individuals.
- Skill and ability to use a computer and work in a Windows environment.
- Good communication skills.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work with animals, disinfectants, and cleaning agents.
- Ability to perform physical work such as scrubbing, mopping, lifting (50lbs. with assistance), walking and standing for up to 8 hours per shift.
- Ability to read and interpret documents, written instructions and to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak clearly with co-workers, volunteers, and the public.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED, prefer Veterinary Assistant Certificate, and at least one year directly working with animals, preferably in a shelter setting.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an animal shelter setting with the potential exposure to high noise levels, zoonotic disease, chemicals, animal bites and scratches. Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to heat, cold, chemicals and cleaning agents. Frequent walking, standing, bending, and stooping are required for up to 8 hours or more per shift to perform essential job functions. Regular lifting of 50 - 70 pounds with reasonable accommodation is required.
