Position Title: Animal Care Technician-Cat Café
Hours: Full-Time ~ 40 hours/week
Supervisor: Cat Café Manager
Classification: Non-exempt, Hourly
SUMMARY
The Animal Care Technician-Cat Café provides compassionate care for all cats, keeps assigned areas clean, offers exemplary
customer service to adopters, visitors, volunteers and staff, and performs advanced animal care and adoption-related assignments.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be a compassionate, flexible, reliable, and motivated individual with excellent customer service, strong communication
skills, and ability to work productively in a fast-paced environment. Must be self-motivated and able to work individually as well as a part of team. Must be an agile and attentive learner with ability to follow verbal and written communications. Must be able to communicate effectively with the public and coworkers in a courteous manner. Available to work weekends and holidays is required. Must possess basic cat care knowledge and be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds. Previous experience in customer service and animal/cat care welfare preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure cats are properly fed and cared for – report any concerning behavior or signs of illness to Cat Café Manager.
- Help acclimate newly introduced cats to environment.
- Help ensure all cats are provided the best welfare, are comfortable and content in the cat café setting.
- Clean and sanitize public areas on a daily basis – keep neat throughout the day.
- Clean food and water dishes as required.
- Scoop/clean litter boxes as necessary, at least 2 times per day.
- Provide medication to cats as necessary.
- Provide excellent customer service, adoption and retail support.
- Make customers feel welcome, explain cat café “rules” in a friendly, non-confrontational way.
- Provide helpful information on cat behavior and health.
- Provide information on scheduled activities and events.
- Assist with adoption approvals and adoption counseling as necessary.
- Encourage sale of merchandise and process payment/receipts.
- Handle difficult situations or problematic behavior.

11. Follow highest standards for animal care and handling. Ensure at all times that assigned animals have basic needs met (e.g.
food, bedding, exercise, water, toys, etc.). Understand and comply with the stress-reduction and enrichment programs for all assigned animals.
12. Observe animals and report significant behaviors or medical concerns within established and appropriate communication channels, including entering information in the shelter software system.
13. Actively and professionally assist visitors within the cat café, including answering general questions, facilitating animal visitation, and providing initial guidance in the adoption process in line with HSHV adoption philosophy.
14. Maintain thorough knowledge of cat available for adoption, including both those in cat café as well as in foster care.
15. Maintain thorough knowledge of products in retail store in order to provide engaged and proactive customer service to adopters and other customers.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Keep informed of and abide by agency policies and procedures, including attending staff meetings/training engaging in assigned readings and Standard Operating Procedure changes, and reading email every shift.
- Ensure a safe work environment by following all safety guidelines, including PPE and modeling safe work practice, in addition to taking immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a team member, volunteer, client, animal or the organization at risk.
- Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing this job, you will be required to continually walk, stand, squat, twist, and kneel, in addition lifting and moving animals, materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds or more. You will be exposed to the kennel/shelter setting, both indoors and outdoors while cleaning the shelter and handling animals. You will be exposed to various weather conditions when working outdoors. You will be exposed to
disinfectant solutions while cleaning. You will be consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens. You may also be subject to potential danger including parasites and infectious diseases, animal bites, and scratches.
MENTAL DEMANDS
While performing this job, you will be regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and interpret situations; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform repetitive work on multiple, concurrent tasks; fulfill intensive deadlines; interact with staff, the public, volunteers and others encountered in the course of work; and be exposed to highly sensitive and potentially emotional situations regarding adopters, volunteers, and animals.
