POSITION SUMMARY
Provides professional nursing care for patients in the medical, surgical, telemetry, intensive care and pediatric unit according to established standards and practices. Supervises support personnel assigned to the medical surgical department.

Utilizes techniques of infection control, including proper hand washing and observing standard precautions when starting IVs, or as circumstances warrant.

Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.

Performs competently during emergency, busy or otherwise stressful situations in the med/surg department.

Competently directs, supervises and delegates activities of licensed and ancillary staff assigned to the med/surg/ICU unit.

Documents patient care and procedures/interventions accurately and thoroughly in accordance with hospital standards.
K
Consistently monitors and/or oversees the monitoring of the telemetry station.
L
Consistently makes rounds with the physicians and nursing staff.
M
Monitors the medical condition of patients and reports changes to appropriate personnel.
N
Prepares, administers and records medications with knowledge and understanding in accordance with policy and procedure.
O
Performs preoperative, postoperative, and relevant health teaching for patients and families.

Responsible for informing nurse manager of nursing activities, needs, problems and unusual events.

Demonstrates technical competency through annual equipment certification, attending manufacturers sponsored in-services, and additional training as required

Maintains knowledge of regulatory standards.

Demonstrates skill and accuracy in hospital computer application.

Actively participates in the review of policies and procedures for the med/surg department annually.

Supports the department by attending, and constructively contributing to staff or other meetings as able/necessary.

Accepts the need to float when staffing dictates.

Maintains a clean, organized and safe working environment in both patient care areas and the nursing station.

Participates in ordering, stocking and inventory of departmental supplies to ensure appropriate items are readily available for patient care needs.

Demonstrates clinical competency in medical/surgical and critical care.

Supports the hospital medication administration competency programs, and seeks professional growth through continuing education, and/or advanced professional certifications (RNC, CCRN, etc.)

Demonstrates appropriate judgment in notifying/communicating with physicians.
D
Admits/discharges patients to the med/surg department according to department/hospital policy.
E
Assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care.
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an accredited school of nursing
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:
- Active Nevada Registered Nursing License or Interim Permit from State Board of Nursing
- Current BLS
- ACLS certification within one year of employment
- PALS certification within one year of employment
- RSI course within one year of employment
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
- BSN
- Specialty Nursing Certification in area
SUPERVISES:
- Support personnel assigned to the unit.
