Job Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician will support the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System (VA NYHHS) by ensuring proper cleaning, sterilization, and storage of medical instruments and equipment. This position requires expertise in aseptic techniques, decontamination procedures, and adherence to safety regulations.
Job Duties & Schedule
Position : Sterile Processing Technician
Hours : On-call availability 24 / 7. Scheduled shifts will be 8 hours (plus a break), up to 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, or as needed on weekends. Maximum of 60 workdays within a 3-month period.
Shift Assignment : Based on department needs; no guarantee of specific shift schedules.
Primary Work Hours : Monday - Friday, 12 : 00 PM - 8 : 30 PM (excluding holidays).
Key Responsibilities
Perform decontamination, sterilization, and high-level disinfection of reusable medical devices (RMD) per manufacturer instructions and regulatory standards.
Assemble, disassemble, operate, and maintain complex surgical instruments and medical equipment.
Ensure compliance with aseptic principles and sterilization techniques.
Adhere to guidelines from The Joint Commission (TJC), VA directives, ANSI / AAMI ST79 standards, IAHCSMM, AORN, CDC, OSHA, and local VA Infection Control policies.
Operate decontamination and sterilization equipment, and document processes using relevant software (e.g., Censitrac, JPSR, eQMS).
Support operating rooms, surgical clinics, dental service areas, inpatient units, and other departments with sterilized instruments.
Skills & Qualifications Required Skills :
Ability to interpret and apply technical materials, regulations, and instructions.
Expertise in sterilization methods, detergent characteristics, and infection prevention.
Proficiency in handling complex surgical instrumentation and flexible endoscopes.
Experience using computer systems for documentation and tracking sterilization processes.
Experience & Education :
Minimum of 3 years of recent sterile processing experience in an acute care facility handling general surgery, orthopedic, cardio-thoracic, vascular, neuro / spine, ENT, laparoscopic, robotic surgeries, and flexible endoscopes.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Certification Requirements :
Required :
IAHCSMM (International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management) Certification or
CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution)
Preferred : Level II VA Certification

The VA NYHHS Sterile Processing Services is ISO 9001 : 2015 certified, requiring strict compliance with quality management standards. Contract technicians will have access to VA systems for documentation but will not handle patient health information (PHI).
