Cashier
Substitute position - variable hours, as needed for vacant shifts
Availability needed - 4-7 days per week, including nights, mornings, and weekends
Do you have a flexible schedule and want some extra income? Or do you just want to know the best way to get a job at the Co-op? The Co-op frequently hires substitute employees to fill in for vacancies, both planned and unplanned. Substitutes earn an hourly wage (a minimum of $16.20 per hour), accrue a paid time off benefit, and are eligible for the employee discount on Co-op purchases. In addition, substitutes have preferred access over outside applicants to jobs with regular hours at the Co-op. Substitutes may work a range of hours up to 40 hours weekly, depending on the Co-op’s need and the substitute’s availability. The most common substitute positions are cashier, grocery clerk and prepared foods worker.
Purpose: To provide a high level of customer service to Hunger Mountain Co-op shoppers through accuracy of transactions, timely and efficient service and a genuine, friendly and helpful manner that leaves our customers feeling they had a great shopping experience.
Status: Reports to Front End Manager
Pay Level 2
Responsibilities:
• Be responsible for safety in the workplace by creating a safe work environment, reporting safety concerns to a manager or member of the Safety Committee, and adhering to safety rules and regulations.
• Follow department policies and procedures.
Customer Service:
• Treat customers fairly, consistently, and with respect.
• Ensure efficient, friendly and informative service according to established customer service vision and standards.
• Begin customer transaction with a friendly greeting such as “Hello, how are you today?” while making eye contact.
• Bag groceries for customers, as needed.
• End customer transaction with a pleasant farewell such as “Thank you, have a nice day.” Remember the cashier is the last staff member the customer will be in contact with.
• Familiarity with Co-op policies and procedures in order to answer customer questions.
• Refer unresolved questions or problems to the Front End Manager, Assistant Manager and/or Front End Supervisors.
Cashiering:
• Open and close out registers following established procedures.
• Check out customers’ purchases quickly while maintaining accuracy with respect to tender and point of sale entries.
• Watch monitor in order to ensure accuracy of entries.
• Pass out membership information to interested customers.
• Accept equity payments.
• Process returns following store policy.
Security and Money Handling:
• Ensure security and accuracy of accounting for all transactions processed during shift including daily deposits, change requests, and security at registers and in the cash room.
• Ensure security of keys used during shift.
• Follow security procedures in handling cash, deposits, disorderly customers or other emergencies.
