About the Opportunity:

Hunter Ambrose International is partnering with a respected Critical Access Hospital in Iowa to identify a Laboratory Manager to lead a high-volume, high-performing hospital-based lab department. With over 600,000 tests performed annually and a team of 19 FTEs, this is an excellent leadership opportunity for an experienced lab professional ready to make an impact in a rural healthcare setting.

Our client is a 25-bed nonprofit facility serving a seven-county region with a population of approximately 23,000. The organization is proud of its family-centered approach to care and its commitment to providing excellent medical services close to home.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the daily operations of a 24/7 hospital-based lab including technologists, MLTs, phlebotomists, lab assistants, and admin support
  • Oversee compliance with SOPs and departmental policy reviews on a biennial basis or as updates occur
  • Partner closely with executive leadership and peer department heads to support hospital-wide initiatives
  • Prepare and manage the lab’s operating and capital budgets with ongoing fiscal oversight
  • Promote a positive culture of collaboration, patient-centered service, and technical excellence
  • Support blood bank operations and ensure effective coordination of inpatient and ED blood draws
  • Develop strong cross-functional relationships and participate in new capital improvement initiatives

Qualifications:

  • MT (ASCP) or MLT (ASCP) certification required
  • Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Background in rural healthcare or familiarity with Critical Access Hospitals preferred
  • Proven track record in budgeting, team development, and regulatory compliance
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to mentor and engage diverse teams

Department Overview:

  • Annual test volume: ~600,000 in-house tests
  • 24/7 lab coverage with outpatient hours: M–F 7:00 AM–5:00 PM, Sat 7:00 AM–12:00 PM
  • On-site phlebotomy team staffed weekdays and weekends; inpatient and ED support handled by techs after hours
  • Equipment includes: Sysmex XN2000, Ortho Vitros XT7600, Cepheid Xpert, BacTec FX40, Abbott iStat, and more
  • EMR: Cerner | Staffing Software: UKG
