Position Summary
The primary responsibility of the Phlebotomist is the proper collection of blood specimens and other non-blood specimens using proper collection techniques as determined by the technical staff of the laboratory. The Phlebotomist will follow all safety instructions and regulation for the proper handling of sharps and biohazard specimens for their safety and that of the patient. Specimens will be delivered to the testing area of the laboratory in a timely manner.
Primary Position Responsibilities
Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen collection and handling.
Properly identifies patient according to hospital and laboratory policy.
Maintains proper documentation on all patients when applicable.
Properly orders requested tests in the laboratory computer system.
Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
When required, will assist Section Supervisor in the supervision of phlebotomy staff.
Assists in training Phlebotomy students and new employees.
Work Contact Group (Internal/External)
Laboratory administration, laboratory technical staff, nursing staff, hospital administration, hospital support staff, patients and their family members.

Indirect: May assist in supervision of Phlebotomy staff when requested by section supervisor.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred:
Completion of certified phlebotomy training program
Required:
Minimum Years of Experience (Amount, Type and Variation):

Required:
License, Registry or Certification:
Must have a valid driver's license.
Preferred:
Certificate in Phlebotomy and ASPT or ASCP Certified
Required:
Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:
Knowledge of basic Microsoft Office Systems, basic laboratory skills, strong customer service skills, and the ability to multitask accurately. Can work in a high stress environment as a team player with minimal supervision.
