Job Goal


To supervise assigned Security System Maintenance Technicians and Security Operators in the execution of their duties, contributing to a safe and secure educational environment for HCS through monitoring the centralized security systems, responding to security issues in a proper and timely manner, dispatching appropriate personnel, providing assistance to district administrators in the resolution of related issues, and performing skilled maintenance and repair of HCS security systems and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership to Security Operators, Security System Maintenance Technicians, and others as assigned by contributing to the training and orientation of new hires; providing direction, support, and information related to security operations; and conducting audits of work performed as appropriate to confirm compliance with established standards and procedures.
  • Assists Security Operations Coordinator with coordinating Security Operator, Security System Maintenance Technician, and others as assigned work schedules to ensure sufficient coverage on a daily basis and oversees work activities for the purpose of confirming that assignments are completed in a timely manner.
  • Supervises the monitoring of centralized computerized security system for district schools and facilities in order to oversee the safety and security of students, staff, and district resources and assets, including conducting constant surveillance of secured areas within the school system; provides law enforcement and District administration with video and other evidence as needed to assist in expulsion hearings, criminal cases, or other matters as needed.
  • Responds to and supervises the response to fire, burglar, and other alarm events, security issues, emergencies, and crisis situations and follows established procedures to dispatch appropriate HCS security staff and notify outside law enforcement and/or emergency personnel as needed.
  • Performs status checks of computerized security system and related equipment and software to ensure proper working order and reports any errors, malfunctions, or system outages to appropriate HCS staff and/or third-party vendors.
  • Monitors HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other systems and utilizes the school district’s online maintenance work order management system to report malfunctions or any other unusual conditions to appropriate HCS staff as needed.

  • Works with Security Operations Coordinator, Operations Director, school principals, senior district administrators, and other HCS staff to assist in the control and resolution of security issues; provides assistance as requested to appropriate district staff and law enforcement in the investigation of incidents.
  • Responds to a wide variety of inquiries and concerns from district administrators, teachers, principals, and other staff via telephone, radio, and other sources for the purpose of resolving security issues, interpreting district security policies, providing information, and directing to appropriate personnel.
  • May provide back-up technical support, serve on shift in the Security Operations Center, and assume patrol duties at district schools and facilities as needed.
  • Serves as primary technical subject matter expert for the HCS Security Department. Maintains research-based knowledge in current trends and best practices within security system technology; reviews current developments, literature, and technical sources of information; utilizes knowledge to ensure ongoing improvements are managed and implemented within the school district; and recommends opportunities for inclusion in district continuous improvement plans.
  • Serves as technical lead in the collaborative efforts between HCS Security, appropriate HCS staff, and outside service providers in the planning and implementation of district construction projects in relation to the selection and configuration of security systems, hardware, and equipment.
  • Reads, analyzes, and interprets equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, manufacturer specifications, etc.; maintains and ensures maintenance of required written and electronic records to appropriately document activities; and prepares reports for conveying information on cost-effective operations of work completed and materials used.
  • Supervises the installation, configuration, and maintenance of security equipment and hardware onsite at assigned school district locations, including but not limited to closed circuit television, cameras, radios, motion/smoke detectors, alarm systems, servers, control panels, etc., to ensure optimum availability of all systems and compliance with appropriate codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Supervises the performance of routine preventative maintenance and updates as specified by hardware manufacturers and installation recommendations; ensures that programs are installed and removed as necessary for proper operation of computer systems.
  • Supervises the Security System Maintenance Technicians as they identify and evaluate hardware and equipment malfunctions; and troubleshoot and/or perform appropriate repairs to equipment to restore proper operation.
  • Utilizes the school district’s online maintenance work order management system to enter and update data necessary to fulfill job functions and complete projects within the established time frame.
  • Recommends replacement of equipment as necessary to take the place of outdated or irreparable hardware and/or systems and orders replacement parts and equipment as approved.
  • Monitors and adheres to established procedures for security systems and equipment in assigned school district locations; communicates and trains district security personnel, administrators, and others on proper usage as appropriate.
  • Travels to HCS facilities to perform job-related duties.
  • May require varying work hours and scheduled days as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Qualifications

A high school diploma and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in security hardware maintenance and security operations in local, state, federal, or military law enforcement and/or security administration. Some college and/or supervisory experience is preferred. Must possess a valid Alabama driver’s license.


Physical Requirements

Requires light work exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. Job involves sitting most of the time.


Terms of Employment

Twelve-month year (240 days). Salary as recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
