Overview
Executes appropriate patient care by assisting the physicians with diagnostic and interventional procedures. Supports team members before, during, and following procedures to assure optimal patient care. ## Registry may define responsibilities that are specific to each registry but does not limit activities under direct physician supervision.
The nurse in the catheterization laboratory (cath lab) has a dynamic and varied role. The major goal of the cath lab nurse is to provide quality-nursing care to the patient in the Imaging Department. Skills utilized in his/her job
performance include assessment, communication, teaching, leadership, and management. The nurse ensures patient privacy and dignity. Areas where the nurse may function are General Diagnostic, Special Procedures,
Cardiac Cath Lab, Radiotherapy, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Computerized Tomography, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Responsible for maintaining the uniform operation of the department by performing a broad range of duties. Receives and processes necessary patient information, Uses independent judgment and initiative to perform patient care according to policy while assuring patient safety, comfort and protection. Communicates effectively and appropriately, works efficiently and productively, maintains a clean and safe environment by demonstrating proper use and care of equipment. Reflects a caring attitude for patients, visitors, and employees. Stays abreast of changes in their profession or discipline through continuing education programs.
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing.
Experience: Cardiac catheterization for diagnostic and interventional procedures, cardiovascular patient care, radiographic special procedures and/or hemodynamic monitoring experience accepted. Desirable characteristics include at least two years of experience in a hospital or medically related environment. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirement relative to the patient’s needs and to provide care needed as described to in policy and procedure.
Licenses/Certificates: Current License with the Alabama Board of Nursing. Current BLS required and ACLS after 6 months. PALS may be required based on the patient population for the service provided.
