POSITION SUMMARY:The Industrial Estimator is responsible for analyzing plans and developing accurate cost estimates for design/build and plan & spec projects in the industrial, refrigeration, and marine trades. Key responsibilities include interpreting blueprints, site conditions, pre-fabrication opportunities, and customer specifications; identifying project requirements; and calculating labor, overhead, supporting labor, equipment, and material costs. Collaboration with the estimation team, sales team, and project managers is essential to ensure successful bids and project handoffs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: To perform this position successfully, the following responsibilities must be performed satisfactorily. - Use estimating software to calculate labor, material, and equipment costs for industrial piping, duct, insulation, and plumbing systems.
- Review and interpret plans, specifications, bills of materials, site conditions, labor availability, and project bid requirements.
- Identify scope of work, schedules, cost impacts, safety requirements, and special conditions.
- Analyze system designs for piping and ductwork, including sizing, capacity calculations, and equipment selections.
- Prepare proposals, customer bid forms, pricing breakdowns, and bid submittal documents for design/build and plan & spec projects.
- Facilitate project handoff and provide estimate details to Project Managers and the production team.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits to fully understand project requirements and collaborate with contractors to confirm scope responsibility.
- Understand piping codes and testing requirements per code, specifications, and owner requests, along with the associated costs.
- Conduct detailed material takeoffs and ensure accurate cost projections.
- Assist with change orders and budget adjustments during project execution.
- Stay updated on industry standards, best practices, and relevant software tools.
- Participate in training programs and complete assigned projects as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- 5 years of experience in mechanical or pipefitter work.
- 3 years of estimating experience in industrial systems.
- Strong knowledge of piping systems, materials, welding processes, high-pressure steam boilers, chillers, ASME B31.3 and B31.1 codes, and process piping systems.
- Understanding of testing procedures for piping and duct systems.
- Familiarity with site conditions and their impact on productivity.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, P&IDs, isometrics, 3D models, and blueprints.
- Proficiency with MS Office and estimation software (QuoteSoft).
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.
- Self-starter who can work independently with minimal supervision.
- Professional demeanor with attention to detail and follow-through.
- Experience with project management and construction accounting is a plus.
Ability to work well with internal and external customers.
