Position Title : School Counselor
Location : Huron Area Technical Center (Grades 11-12)
Job Summary :
The School Counselor will utilize leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to foster students’ academic, social, and emotional development.
The School Counselor will also support attendance management, oversee student behavior plans, facilitate testing, and assist with the Educational Management Certificate (EMC) Coordinator duties.
Educational Qualifications :
Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a School Counselor (NT) Endorsement or Michigan School Counselor License (SCL)
Minimum Qualifications and Skills :
- Strong knowledge of Michigan’s educational and graduation requirements
- Familiarity and experience with Michigan’s Comprehensive Guidance Program
- Successful completion and maintenance of a School Employment background check
- Commitment to Huron Intermediate School District’s (HISD) Mission, Vision, Guiding Principles, and Expectations as outlined on
- Physical and mental capability to handle rigorous work, including prolonged standing / sitting and the ability to lift or push a minimum of 50 pounds
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) / Counseling :
- Provide effective individual or group counseling, especially during crises or for personal issues
- Collaborate with the ISD social work team and local schools for comprehensive support
- Oversee behavior plans and support strategies for students
- Organize and run student groups for weekly check-ins
Dual & Concurrent Enrollment (in collaboration with Student Service Specialist) :
- Daily support for dual enrollment, including setting up Zoom sessions, taking attendance, and monitoring students
- Assist with dual enrollment processes : student registration, recruitment, and delivering informative presentations to local schools
- Manage student Skyward sections and assist with college registration applications
- Organize tutoring and oversee communication between students, parents, local schools, and colleges
- Manage concurrent enrollment, including setting up Webex sessions and assisting staff with Moodle Shell and related responsibilities
Attendance :
Act as the primary contact for attendance deficiency meetings with students, focusing on attendance and academic performance
Testing Coordination :
Administer and coordinate testing, including Accuplacer, ASVAB, CLEP, and DECA proctoring
Edgenuity Support :
Assist local schools with Edgenuity, manage seat allocations, and facilitate purchases
EMC Support :
- Help organize events like Bootcamp, Kickoff, Refresh, and Revise events
- Stay updated on policies and procedures relevant to state, district, and school requirements
- Participate in ongoing professional development and commit to continuous learning
Technology Use :
Employ technology for educational purposes, proficiently using Google Applications, Microsoft Word / Excel, and other software
Additional Responsibilities :
- Hold a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation
- Ensure regular and consistent in-person attendance
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Terms of Employment :
- Compensation and benefits per the Huron Intermediate Education Association (HIEA) Bargaining Agreement
- 185-day school year calendar, with occasional summer and evening hours as needed
- FLSA Status : Exempt Professional
