General Purpose

Performs a variety of journey level skilled duties related to the maintenance, service, repair and rebuilding of light or heavy-duty mechanized vehicles, engines and equipment within the parks and recreation departments; maintains equipment inventory and maintenance records.

Supervision Received

Works under the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent or Parks Maintenance Supervisor

Essential Functions - (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

Performs ongoing preventative maintenance on all Parks Department motorized equipment; tunes and sharpens mower blades; overhauls broken equipment; fabricates tools and equipment parts which are not readily available; performs extensive metal fabrication (hoists, mower parts, etc.), welding and hard facing using electric and acetylene equipment; operates drill and hydraulic presses.

Maintains equipment inventory and maintenance records; monitors use of parts and assures proper availability of inventory; orders parts and materials; stocks shelves; performs general shop maintenance to assure properly working tools and equipment.

Performs mechanical trouble shooting and analysis of malfunctions using various technical and computerized testing and calibration equipment (diagnostic computers, scanners, scopes, battery tester, pneumatic equipment, lathe, etc.) as needed to assure safe and efficient operation of department equipment.

Inspects malfunctioning vehicles and equipment, determines source of problem and makes necessary repairs and adjustments to lawn mowing equipment, etc.; changes oil, filters, and greases parts.

Installs, maintains and repairs electrical and electronic systems, components, parts, accessories and equipment; assures proper function.

Services and replaces equipment parts such as radiators, generators, alternators, starters, steering, suspension, distributors, bearings, bushings, hoses, belts, brakes and clutches as required; performs repair or replacement of damaged body parts and frames; may perform spray painting as needed.

Assures compliance with M.S.D.S. requirements for all chemical, oils, solvents and materials utilized by the department.

Assists with maintenance and repair of automated sprinkler systems; participates in mowing, fertilizing and spraying operations.

Assist in the preparation and cleanup of city sponsored events, sporting events and other miscellaneous activities.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; AND

Two (2) years' work experience in the operation, repair and maintenance of light or heavy-duty mechanized vehicles, engines and equipment, both diesel and gasoline type engines and hydraulic equipment.

Possess a valid Driver's License throughout employment; Utah Commercial Driver License is desirable

Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening required.

Special Qualifications

Possess, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment, First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate.

Possess, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment, UDOT Flagger Certification.

All accredited certifications must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the design, adjustment, operation, maintenance and repair of diversified mechanical and electrical equipment including light gasoline and diesel engines; materials and tools used in equipment maintenance; the safety practices required by state and other laws; fuel systems and computerized control systems. Gas and arc welding methods and procedures preferred.

Skill inthe use of mechanical tools, materials, welding and testing equipment;the operation of various types of light equipment such as gang mower, backhoe, etc.

Abilitytoread and interpret maintenance manuals, parts books and mechanical drawings; diagnose complex and non-routine mechanical and electrical defects or problems and determine parts and adjustments necessary to repair equipment; maintain written equipment maintenance records and operate computers at a basic skill level; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors and employees of all departments.

Typical Physical / Mental Demands / Working Conditions

Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions.

Moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching.

Frequent exposure to heat, cold, dampness and humidity; working outside and inside; around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Frequent exposure to, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline and diesel fuel.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

May require working extended or irregular hours such as weekends, nights, and holidays.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving

mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.

The employee is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration.

The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud

Condition of Employment

Employee may be required to work extended or irregular hours such as nights, weekends and holidays. Hurricane City employment can require employees to occasionally work outside of their normal job duties to assist with city sponsored events and / or projects. The employee is expected to forgo normal work duties to assist with the completion of these events and / or projects. In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.
