Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is a transformative learning and research community leading educational programs and scientific research on Hurricane Island in Penobscot Bay, Maine. Our mission is to integrate scientific research and education on a Maine coastal island to develop leaders prepared to address environmental issues in a rapidly changing world. Our vision is to create a network of community leaders solving environmental problems creatively, scientifically, and collaboratively for the Gulf of Maine and beyond. The Outreach Manager is the primary staff member responsible for maintaining consistent branding and coordinating the external outreach of the organization through all avenues including various web-based, social media, print, and radio platforms. The Outreach Manager assists the fundraising efforts by providing donor and guest stewardship (both on and off-island), and assists outreach for new program development in collaboration with the Education and Research teams as needed. The position represents the organization with a donor-centered and relationship-building approach. The Outreach Manager is integrated into the day-to-day operations of the organization by being based in our Rockland office year round and by additionally being required to work scheduled days/week on Hurricane Island during the summer season. Rustic housing and meals on Hurricane Island are provided during required island meetings and overnight events during the island season ( April - October). Out of state travel, in addition to travel to and working from Hurricane Island, and occasional week-end hours are also expected.


A successful candidate must be well-organized, flexible, and able to function in a dynamic working environment. Additional responsibilities to what is described here may be required, as needed. The Outreach Manager reports to the Advancement Director.

Responsibilities & Expectations

Outreach Responsibilities include:

  • Plan and manage Hurricane Island’s community engagement
  • Capture, record, and strategically share timely topics and key contacts
  • Organize, arrange, and/or conduct visits with strategic schools, colleges and universities, and other outside organizations and agencies

Marketing Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, content, printing and distribution of promotional materials
  • Maintain the social media platforms for the organization & create original content
  • Curate the organization’s image library and arrange photo shoots of necessary images
  • Update website content and images
  • Create written, photo and video content
  • Coordinate the design, ordering, sales, and distribution of merchandise
  • Implement our organizational marketing plans


Fundraising, Event & Donor Stewardship Responsibilities

  • Provide support during fundraising appeals as needed
  • Coordinate the guest lists and guest communication for events
  • Welcome island visitors, conduct island tours, and facilitate island visits
  • Maintain a regular presence on Hurricane Island during the summer programming season Mid-June - Mid September
  • Provide outreach and marketing assistance with event planning as needed

Essential Qualif ications

  • Associate or Bachelor degree in the arts or humanities
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a flexible work environment
  • Strong capacity for thinking creatively to solve problems
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Prior experience managing multiple marketing platforms
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
  • Facility with graphic design software
  • Ability to translate ideas through visual mediums
  • Proven customer relations skills
  • Demonstrated initiative to identify and complete projects and work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • U.S. Citizen or non-citizen permanent resident.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Adobe In-design
  • Experience working in Little Green Light database
  • Professional experience in social media marketing
  • Graphic arts training
  • Event planning experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of ecology and marine science
  • Working experience with racial and ethnic minority groups, English language learners, urban youth, low-income communities, immigrant communities, LGBTQ communities, people with special needs, and other groups that are underrepresented in the field of environmental education.

Compensation : SALARY EXEMPT

This is a year round position with benefits. We offer a competitive compensation package that includes paid time off and medical, dental, life, and short term disability insurance.
