POSITION SUMMARY
The Chair of the Department of Educator Preparation leads the effort to prepare education candidates at both the undergraduate and master's levels to become skilled and dedicated professional educators. This role involves clearly communicating the department's purpose, goals, and mission, while working collaboratively with faculty, fostering their professional growth, and maintaining the quality of the department's services, faculty, and staff. The Chair is also responsible for implementing best practices that demonstrate students' mastery of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required by the State Board for Educator Certification.
TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide leadership and vision to the Educator Preparation Department.
- Teach courses in the discipline.
- Work with department faculty to create an academic, cultural, and physical environment conducive to scholarship, intellectual vitality, and learning; and establish and nurture a supportive diverse work environment.
- Promote the Vision, Mission and Core Values of the University through the activities and programs of the Educator Preparation Department.
- Supervise the Director of the Alternative Teacher Certification Program.
- Oversee the African American Male Teachers Initiative.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. required with teaching experience in the K-12 and college levels.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of and experience with Teacher Certifications tests.
- Established record of superior university teaching, exemplary scholarship, and distinguished university, professional, and community/public service.
- Administrative leadership, vision, and experience in a diverse academic environment characterized by collegial management, mentorship, inclusive decision-making, and effective communication skills.
- Ability to create and nurture a supportive environment that utilizes transparent processes to foster intellectual vitality, creativity, student learning, and outstanding teaching, research, and community/public service.
- Commitment to affirmative action, social justice, and diversity in all its forms; experience in promoting the learning opportunities offered by a diverse community.
- Ability to effectively represent the Educator Preparation Department in state meetings while working in collaboration within the University community.
- Working knowledge of Texas Education Agency regulations.
SUPERVISION
- This position reports to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs
SALARY RANGE
- $80,000 Annually, plus benefits!

Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson University is Austin's first institution of higher education. The University is an independent, liberal arts, church-related, historically black institution located on a 23-acre tree-lined campus near downtown Austin, Texas. Undergraduate, four-year degrees in business, education, the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences are awarded.
