Role:

Provides professional nursing care for clinic patients following established standards and practices and maintains office hours as directed by physician.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

• Administer all intravenous medications, including cytotoxic agents with proper training, under the direction and supervision of a physician using correct mediation dosage/amount, route, time, and technique.
• Access implanted ports and maintain central lines and catheter devices.
• Checks appropriate lab data before administration of cytotoxic agent. Reports any abnormal results to provider.
• Documents administration and side effects in the medical record.
• Plan, implement, and coordinate individualized treatment plans for patients.
• Educate and teach patients and families about treatment expectations and after treatment care.
• Observe patients on a constant basis and report and record any unusual findings.
• Store, check, and administer medication in accordance with established standards and guidelines.
• Safely carry out physician’s orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.
• Set, monitor, and maintain excellent standards of nursing care.
• Maintain personal contact with patients and relatives, being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity, and privacy and always ensure a friendly environment.
• Provide emotional support to patients and families to promote a positive outlook.
• Maintaining timely and accurate nursing records ensuring that confidentiality is respected.
• Participate in the care and maintenance of infusion pumps and other specialized equipment.
• Maintain a safe and clean environment within the clinical area in accordance with established standards and regulations. Restocks the supply area as needed.
• Solid understanding of safety principles, asepsis, and universal precautions.
• Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for professional practice and continued professional growth. Attends all in-services and meetings as appropriate.
• Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

• Observes facilities guidelines and polices.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

• Experience: Minimum 2 year of experience in a related healthcare position.
• Education: Must be a licensed registered nurse (RN) in the state of Kansas. BLS is required. Biotherapy Course completion preferred, required 12 months after hire date.
• Work Environment: Exposure to communicable diseases and toxic substances. Potential exposure to hazardous drugs.  
• Physical Requirements: Occasionally lifts or carries items weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires full range of body motion. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Vision and hearing to normal range.
• Other Skills: Ability to care for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Ability to correlate clinical data with nursing care. Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care according to individual needs. Must demonstrate an understanding of clinical risk. Ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations. Knowledge of EMR system. Must demonstrate consistent professional conduct and meticulous attention to detail. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication as well as excellent interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and other health care professionals. Works to achieve and maintain regulatory certification of the Department. Must be willing to flex work hours as needed and/or requested by the Oncology Supervisor and/or Director of Operations.
