JOB DESCRIPTION
Health Unit Coordinators are very important members of our patient-care team. Responsibilities include greeting all patients and family members at the nurses’ station, answering patient intercom calls, assisting with patient discharge, performing order transcription, taking physician orders and performing chart maintenance.
Job Summary:
The Health Unit Coordinator works with our nursing team and provides clerical support and customer service through a variety of designated functions and responsibilities to professional staff, patients and visiting community members.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assists with management of patient information to facilitate flow and communication needs within the admission, transfer and discharge processes (i.e. transfer paperwork).
- Monitors internal and external alarm systems and initiates communication as needed within the building to maintain staff, patient and visitor safety. (i.e. Severe weather alerts, facilities alarms, fall alert system, etc.)
- Maintains expertise in internal/external communication systems and completes notifications as delegated for routine daily patient needs (paging of physicians) as well as for urgent and emergent needs (i.e. Rapid Assessment Team (RAT) calls, Code Blues, Trauma Code Teams, Surgical Team notifications).
- Performs daily charge entry function including assuring the consistent accuracy of accommodation codes status, and basic documentation review to verify the accuracy of charges entered for all patients seen in Acute Care Service areas.
- Serves as an organizational resources and communication point during episodes of downtime for the electronic medical record system.
- Utilizes professional customer service skills to give direction and assist internal and external customers with questions and concerns.
- Provides other clerical support as needed for maintenance of an accurate patient record and general unit organization.
- Facilitates interdisciplinary and interdepartmental communication and collaboration as able.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education, Training or Degree Required:
- Formal training with experience in medical terminology preferred.
License/Registration/Certification Required:
- None
Experience and Skills: (indicate preferred or required)
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills required.
- Well-developed customer service skills required.
- Ability to work within Microsoft office preferred.
