What are the responsibilities and job description for the Perfusionist - Full Time position at Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System?
Provides comprehensive perfusion services and ensures the safe management of physiologic functions for scheduled and emergent surgical procedures; administers various types of blood products and medication; controls the temperature and blood flow of the patient and monitors the patient’s circulatory process during the procedure under the direction of the surgeon.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs the clinical perfusion services, under the general supervision and at the direction of the attending cardiovascular surgeon, during cardiothoracic surgical procedures Confers with the cardiovascular surgeon regarding the nature of the procedure to be performed. Cardiovascular surgery and perfusion services are for adult through the geriatric population.
- Gathers the necessary patient information to be used in conjunction with the operation of the heart lung machine.
- Independently operates the heart lung machine during the surgical procedure while performing those functions necessary to maintain the patient in stable condition.
- Coordinates procedure needs with the operating room staff.
- Monitors physiologic parameters during the surgical procedure.
- Administers IV fluids, blood and blood products, as well as pharmacological agents such as vasopressors, vasodilators, anticoagulants and anesthetics during the course of the procedure.
- Actively maintains policies and procedures for perfusion services in accordance with hospital and Joint Commission requirements.
- Coordinates with Materials Management the selection, ordering, and stocking of supplies used during the provision of perfusion services.
- Performs ancillary procedures of autotransfusion, blood processing, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and clinical laboratory services.
- Performs quality assurance on perfusion equipment as recommended.
- Actively participates in collection, management and reporting of patient data for process improvement.
- Collaborates with the cardiovascular surgeon with regard to perfusion services and reports to a designated medical center administrative representative for coordination of hospital activities.
- Maintains 24/7 availability and responds to an emergency call and arrives within 30 minutes.
- Provides education/in-service for and assists in recommending and providing proficient, reliable perfusion coverage in the absence of employed perfusionist.
- Observes the general operating protocol, regulations and policies of the medical center.
- Abides by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of the extra-corporal equipment appropriate for all ages served.
- Knowledge of blood products, anesthetic agents and drugs.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Graduation from an accredited perfusion program.
- One year experience.

REQUIRED LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
- Maintains certification with the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
- Healthcare Provider BLS through AHA or ARC before start date
