Position Overview

Hutco, Inc. is seeking an experienced Drydock Mechanic Handyman (J4) to join our team in Norfolk, Virginia. This position involves the maintenance, repair, and operation of drydock machinery and equipment, ensuring a safe and efficient docking environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical repairs, drydock operations, and safety compliance, with the ability to work independently.

Essential Functions

• Perform work in accordance with work specifications, ensuring safety, quality, and professionalism.
• Diagnose, repair, and install drydock machinery and mechanical equipment with minimal supervision.
• Prepare the drydock for docking evolutions, including fabrication, preparation, and assembly of drydock blocks.
• Monitor drydock machinery gauges, meters, and alarms to identify malfunctions and take appropriate action.
• Operate and maintain equipment, including diesel engines and other machinery.
• Perform drydock watch duties according to operational procedures and instructions.

Position Demands

Education and Training:

• Working knowledge of technical publications, drawings, and diagrams.
• Familiarity with routine mechanical repairs and installation techniques.
• Ability to navigate ships, drydocks, and understand compartment designations.

Experience:

• Proficiency with measuring instruments, including micrometers, tachometers, dial indicators, and calipers.
• Expertise in using common shop and hand tools.
• Strong understanding of mechanical, air, hydraulic, and electrical systems used in drydock operations.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift, carry, and move tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Frequent climbing, crouching, kneeling, and working in confined spaces aboard vessels.
• Prolonged periods of standing and walking (75% of the time).
• Exposure to varied temperatures, wind, humidity, fumes, dust, and noise.

Responsibilities

• Verify that tanks and compartments have updated and compliant hot work tickets, WAFs, and safety measures in place.
• Conduct inspections to ensure safe working conditions and compliance with safety regulations.
• Maintain a clean and safe job site after completing tasks.
• Coordinate and supervise personnel to ensure quality and productivity.
• Write and maintain Work Authorization Forms (WAFs) and ensure all safety equipment is used appropriately.

Key Qualifications

Journeyperson 4 (J4):

• Advanced knowledge of technical publications, diagrams, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to independently diagnose and repair drydock machinery and equipment.
• Proficiency in fabricating and assembling drydock blocks for docking evolutions.
• Skilled in operating drydock machinery and performing watch duties without supervision.

Journeyperson 3 (J3):

• Competency in the above responsibilities, requiring some supervision.

Journeyperson 2 (J2):

• Basic knowledge and experience in the above areas, requiring supervision.

Journeyperson 1 (J1):

• Limited knowledge, requiring close supervision to complete tasks.

Handyman:

• Assist mechanics by transporting materials and supporting work on-site.

Unique Requirements

• Reliable transportation is essential.
• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and up to 10% travel.
• Ability to work aboard vessels, climb ladders, and operate in confined spaces.
• Must wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators.

Accountability

This role reports to the Drydock Supervisor and/or DockMaster and is accountable for completing tasks with safety, precision, and efficiency. Regular attendance and adherence to job-site safety protocols are mandatory.
