What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outside Plant Technician position at Hyak?
General Summary:
As an Outside Plant Technician at Hyak, you will play a critical role in the Outside Plant (OSP) department by facilitating the construction of a Fiber-to-the-Home network build. Reporting directly to the crew lead, the Outside Plant Technician 1 will have the opportunity to move between different teams and learn skills such as operations of various heavy machinery, setting up traffic control, install poles, strand, fiber, or conduit and even how to splice fiber optic cable. This is an entry level position with opportunities for career advancement. OJT will be provided.
Essential Job Functions:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Maintain a safe environment and ensure all safety standards are met.
- Installation of outdoor fiber infrastructure and equipment
- Assist with new construction
- Operate various types of heavy-duty power equipment and hand tools in the construction and repair of outside plant cable facilities, conduit, and pole lines.
- Perform various types of construction operations which all require heavy physical labor and lifting.
- Perform repetitive tasks, e.g., manually digging poles/and or holes.
- Work with tools, equipment and cable that may be heavy which have to be loaded and unloaded from Hyak vehicle, moved, or rearranged.
- Required to follow standards and practices while meeting service deadlines.
- Demonstrated attention to quality construction practices.
- Perform housekeeping duties for assigned Hyak vehicles and various work locations for the safety of the employee and protection of the facilities under construction.
- Receive verbal and/or written work orders and instructions from supervisor.
- Communicate and coordinate with other work groups to perform test on work in progress or completed work and obtains additional information regarding work assignment.
- Load required tools and material into assigned Hyak vehicle and drives or rides to work locations.
- Drive vehicles and tow other vehicles.
- Perform a wide range of traffic control tasks to provide safety and support the team on job sites or public/private roadways. Hyak will provide flagger certification training.
- Prioritize tasks through to completion, as individual and team contributor.
- Acquiring field data to be used for designing network routes
- Ability to learn new technical systems and tools
- Detecting faulty operations and defective material and reporting those and any unusual situations to proper supervision
- Complying with safety regulations and maintaining clean and orderly work areas
- Performing other work-related duties as assigned
- Perform time reporting tasks on a daily basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation
- Ability to work outdoors 90% of the time
- High School Diploma and or equivalent work experience
- Flagging card preferable. But will train within 90 days of hire if necessary
- Experience with fiber network deployments preferred
- Utility locating experience a plus
- Comfortable working on ladders
- Basic computer skills and knowledge
- Customer service oriented and professional in appearance
- Must be highly motivated and able to work in a team and independently
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screen upon hire.
- Must be able to work overtime as required

Outside Plant Technician work involves driving a motor vehicle approximately 10% of the time and must be able to regularly and safely perform all functions of operating a motor vehicle. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary to frequently stand, walk, climb, or sit for prolonged periods of time and regularly position oneself (e.g. bend, twist, reach, grasp, push, pull) and/or handle, lift, and carry objects over 50 lbs. frequently. Close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus; ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires.
