GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Hyde County Schools is seeking an innovative leader to serve as Principal of Mattamuskeet School (grades PreK–12). The Principal of Mattamuskeet School will lead the school through the construction process and will foster a safe, inclusive, and academically rigorous environment while ensuring that all students are prepared for postsecondary success. As the instructional leader, the Principal is expected to cultivate a collaborative school culture, effectively manage school operations, and actively engage with the community in support of the school’s vision for excellence.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

SUPERVISES: All personnel assigned to the school

Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Leadership

• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the school’s instructional programs.
• Support high-quality teaching through observation, coaching, and professional development.
• Utilize data-driven decision-making to monitor and improve student achievement and growth.
• Promote inclusive practices that support all learners, including EC, AIG, ESL, and at-risk populations.

School Culture and Climate

• Foster a positive, inclusive, and safe school culture that prioritizes student well-being and belonging.
• Promote equity, cultural responsiveness, and high expectations for all students.
• Collaborate with families, staff, and students to implement restorative practices and a PBIS-aligned approach to discipline.

Operational Management

• Oversee daily school operations, including schedules, facilities, budgeting, transportation, and food services.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district policies and regulations.
• Supervise and evaluate all school personnel using NC Educator Evaluation System (NCEES) or classified staff.

Community and Family Engagement

• Build strong partnerships with families and the community to enhance student learning and opportunities.
• Serve as the public face of Mattamuskeet School in Hyde County and represent the school in district and regional initiatives.
• Lead and support community events, outreach efforts, and collaborative partnerships with local organizations.

Qualifications

Required:

• Master’s Degree in School Administration or related field.
• North Carolina Principal License or eligibility for licensure.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of successful leadership experience.
• Demonstrated success in improving student achievement and closing opportunity gaps.

Preferred:

• Experience in a rural or high-poverty school setting.
• Familiarity with PreK–12 school models.
• Proven ability to lead change initiatives and build staff capacity.

Essential Job Functions

• Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics of data, people or things.
• Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.
• Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, articles, proposals, contracts, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, policies, etc. using prescribed formats.
• Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.
• Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal and counseling terminology.
• Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.
• Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
