The Role

We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer with strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server and related data technologies to design, implement, and maintain data warehousing solutions for our federal and commercial clients. This role will focus on building robust data architectures using Microsoft's data platform, developing optimized ETL processes, and ensuring high-performance data access for reporting and analytics. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, and Azure Synapse Analytics, with a proven track record of implementing enterprise-scale data warehouse solutions.

Key Responsibilities SQL Server Data Warehouse Development

• Design and implement enterprise data warehouses using SQL Server and related technologies
• Create dimensional models (star and snowflake schemas) that support business reporting needs
• Develop stored procedures, functions, and views to optimize data access and processing
• Implement SQL Server performance tuning techniques, including indexing strategies and query optimization
• Design and maintain SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages for ETL processes
• Work with columnstore indexes and in-memory OLTP for high-performance data warehousing
• Implement partitioning, compression, and other techniques to manage large datasets efficiently

Microsoft Data Platform Integration

• Develop data pipelines between on-premises SQL Server and Azure data services
• Implement solutions using Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Data Lake
• Create and maintain SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) cubes and tabular models
• Design and deploy SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and Power BI solutions
• Implement Master Data Management (MDM) and Data Quality Services (DQS) solutions
• Configure high availability and disaster recovery solutions for SQL Server environments
• Integrate Microsoft data platform tools with other enterprise systems and data sources

Data Architecture and Governance

• Design data architectures that meet both operational and analytical requirements
• Establish data governance policies and procedures for the Microsoft data ecosystem
• Implement security models and access controls for sensitive data
• Develop automated testing frameworks for data validation and quality assurance
• Create technical documentation for data models, ETL processes, and warehouse architecture
• Mentor junior team members on SQL Server best practices and data warehouse concepts
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand reporting requirements and translate them into technical solutions

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
• 5 years of experience in data engineering with a focus on Microsoft SQL Server
• Strong expertise in T-SQL programming and SQL Server administration
• Extensive experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) for ETL development
• Hands-on experience designing and implementing enterprise data warehouses
• Proficiency with dimensional modeling techniques and data warehouse architecture
• Experience with SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and MDX/DAX query languages
• Knowledge of Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and other Microsoft cloud data services
• Familiarity with Power BI for data visualization and reporting
• Understanding of database performance tuning and optimization techniques
• Experience with data governance, security, and compliance requirements
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Excellent communication skills for collaborating with technical and business stakeholders
• Microsoft certifications (MCSA/MCSE: Data Management and Analytics) preferred
• Experience with federal government data projects and security compliance a plus
• U.S. Citizenship required
• Must be located in the Washington DC Metro Area

Work Location: Hybrid (Rockville, MD up to 3 days per week)
