Hygieia Biological Laboratories has a new position open as a microbiology laboratory assistant. Hygieia is engaged in the research, development, and manufacture of vaccines and related products for human and animal health. The Microbiology Laboratory Assistant provides support in the manufacture of vaccines in a production laboratory setting.
Position Specific Responsibilities
- Assist with the performance of small-and large-scale bacterial culture operations
- Assist in the inoculation, harvest, processing, and inactivation of bacterial antigen
- Perform quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) assays or processes, in accordance with protocols
- Assist with the creation of master seed cultures
- Assist in process development and optimization studies
- Perform daily observations and documentation of facility and equipment parameters
- Assist in setting up for sterile operations and clean-up of waste and production materials
- Assist with the operation of equipment for antigen production according to approved procedures, notifying supervisor if equipment is not functioning properly
- Clean and sanitize glassware and equipment
- Prepare media, solutions, reagents, and disinfectants
- Perform general housekeeping of the laboratory and routine preventative maintenance of equipment
General Responsibilities
- Perform duties according to applicable Standard Operating Procedures
- Accurately complete documentation in real time according to good documentation practices
- Follow guidelines for safe laboratory practices and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
- Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications and Physical Capabilities
- Knowledge of and experience with aseptic technique
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision
- Good math skills, with the ability to calculate dilutions, concentrations, and cell counts
- Ability to gown for sterile operations
- Ability to lift and manipulate up to 40 lbs. on a regularbasis
- Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to safely manipulate large equipment and glassware
- Good written and oral English communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and swing shifts as occasionally needed
Working Conditions
- Must have reliable transportation
- Hours are 40 hours per week with flexibility
- Overtime, Weekend, and Swing Shift work will occasionally be required
Education
- Bachelor of Science or Associate degree in Microbiology or Biological Sciences (preferred)
Or
- 1-2yrs equivalent laboratory experience
