Hyperquake is an independent creative studio headquartered in Cincinnati, OH, with offices located in Brooklyn, NY and Salt Lake City, UT.

We recently merged with Potion Design, which is a multidisciplinary creative agency that crafts technology into intuitive interactive experiences. Potion and Hyperquake focus on immersive experiences in physical spaces: destinations for humans to engage with ideas and brands in uniquely memorable ways using content, design, and interactive technology.

We are seeking an experienced Design Director to supercharge the creative vision of our team through motion, visual impact, and interaction. Ideal candidates have proven success combining art (visual design), technology (motion), and psychology (user experience) to create solid designs that not only look good, but also works effectively, and are user-friendly. Combining these skills in all your projects will ensure the production of high-quality work that stands out in the market.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership to Potion’s design discipline in line with our mission and vision

Manage the collective efforts of the design team, supporting best practices, mentorship, and positive and critical feedback

Lead by example, demonstrating design excellence across a range of internal and external projects

Lead, oversee, and promote the highest standards of design practice at Potion

Maintain the pulse on design trends in various spaces of operation and keep the studio relevant

Leverage skills in visual design, motion, and user experience across each project you manage.

• Visual design: Your skills here would be essential in creating visually pleasing elements that not only capture attention but also make information easily absorbable.
• Motion: In the context of digital design you would be expected to utilize your understanding of motion graphics to create dynamic and engaging interfaces. Spatial awareness is particularly important when dealing with motion graphics. It's crucial to understand how objects move within a given space, how they interact with one another, and how transitions can affect the overall user experience. A good sense of timing, pacing, and progression can lead to motion designs that feel natural, intuitive, and engaging.
• User Experience: Leverage UX principles to ensure that the projects you contribute to are user-friendly. This means thinking about the end-user's needs, preferences, and behaviors throughout the whole design process. Considering spatial understanding in UX design allows you to create interfaces that feel intuitive and natural for the user. You need to understand how users will navigate these spaces, how actions will unfold over time, and where to place elements for optimum accessibility and efficiency.

Coordinate with other Discipline Directors to identify best allocation of resources

Monitor and provide oversight on the overall quality and execution level of projects

Represent Potion as a knowledgeable expert in client engagements, proposals, and presentations

Evaluate design discipline needs and make hiring recommendations

Required attendance at our Brooklyn office on Wednesdays, with optional, flexible in-office requirements for the rest of the week as needed.

Qualifications

Proven experience as a Design Director or similar role

5 years experience

Strong creative portfolio showcasing high-end digital design skills

Demonstrated leadership and ability to guide and inspire a design team

Solid understanding of digital design trends and applications

Experience with project management and resource allocation

Willing to travel intermittently for client meetings, presentations, and installations
