Our Team
Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI), is the design, technology and engineering arm for all North American models of the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Group. The electrified propulsion engineering and design (ePED) team is one of the groups in the electrified propulsion development division of HATCI responsible for providing quality, testing, validation, technical support, and component design for all types of vehicle propulsion systems.
The Position
We are looking for a talented, passionate and motivated propulsion system simulation engineer in the propulsion management and design (PMD) team at our Superior Township, MI facility. This position will support HATCI's propulsion development activities with simulations for vehicle energy efficiency, electric range, performance, EV propulsion system architecture design, off-cycle greenhouse gas credit analysis, and powertrain models for feature calibration.
Core Responsibilities :
Develop 1-D propulsion system models for ICE, HEV, PHEV, and BEV, and simulate vehicle energy flows, losses, and road loads
Conduct vehicle and component testing for data collection and model validation
Create models for engine, motor, and hybrid vehicle controls to support calibration, optimization, and data analysis
Model propulsion system components for evaluation and design studies
Benchmark competitive vehicles and propulsion technologies
Analyze and report simulation and vehicle measurement data
Develop and maintain propulsion system simulation best practices
Collaborate with global teams in the US and South Korea, with occasional domestic and international travel (up to 10%)
Core Capabilities :
Proven experience in vehicle modeling for performance, fuel economy, and emissions
Detailed understanding of vehicle propulsion systems, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, and BEVs
Basic understanding of energy flows, losses, thermal loads, and conversion efficiency in conventional, HEV, and BEV systems
Strong experience with vehicle propulsion system and component models for virtual development
Proficiency in analyzing and visualizing vehicle data using MATLAB, Python, or similar tools
Effective communication skills for technical discussions with various stakeholders
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams

Basic Qualifications :
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering degree from an accredited university
2 years of experience in vehicle propulsion system simulation and model-based development
Strong interpersonal and technical problem-solving skills
Demonstrated experience using engineering simulation tools such as MATLAB / Simulink, GT-Suite or AVL Cruise
Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record

Preferred Qualifications :
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering degree from an accredited university
5 years of total automotive industry experience in one or more of the following areas : (1) instrumentation and testing of vehicle propulsion and related systems, (2) evaluating mHEV, FHEV, PHEV, and BEV performance, emissions, and fuel economy / efficiency test data, (3) vehicle propulsion system simulation and model-based development
Understanding of and experience executing EPA fuel economy test procedures
Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS / INCA or ATI Vision
Tool development, data analysis scripting, and simulation automation using MATLAB
Knowledge and experience in vehicle control systems and calibration procedures
Working level knowledge of vehicle testing tools such as ATI Vision, ETAS INCA or CAN bus monitoring applications such as Vector CANalyzer or similar
