The Reading Tutor will work directly with children to improve their literacy skills and foster a love of reading. This role involves providing individualized or small group tutoring sessions focused on reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary development. The Reading Tutor will implement evidence-based strategies to help students achieve literacy goals while creating a positive and engaging learning environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Conduct individual or small group tutoring sessions for children in elementary and middle school, focusing on improving reading skills and overall literacy.
- Use evidence-based instructional strategies to teach reading comprehension, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary development.
- Monitor student progress and adjust instructional methods based on individual needs and learning styles.
- Create and deliver age-appropriate lesson plans that align with literacy program goals and educational standards.
- Incorporate interactive activities, games, and reading exercises to make learning engaging and enjoyable for students.
- Modify lesson plans as needed to address specific learning challenges or goals for each student.
- Regularly assess students’ reading levels and track their progress through informal assessments, observations, and feedback from classroom teachers.
- Provide updates to program coordinators and families on student progress, strengths, and areas for improvement.
- Communicate with families about their child’s progress, providing tips and resources for supporting literacy development at home.
- Collaborate with program staff, including teachers, consultants, and coordinators, to align tutoring sessions with overall program objectives.
- Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as needed to stay updated on best practices in literacy instruction.
- Build a rapport with students to create a supportive and encouraging tutoring environment.· Use positive reinforcement and motivation techniques to keep students engaged and confident in their reading abilities.
- Ensure that all tutoring sessions are inclusive, culturally responsive, and sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of students.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required·
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Child Development, or a related field (preferred)
Experience:
- 1-2 years of experience working with children, preferably in tutoring or teaching capacity.
- Knowledge of reading development and evidence-based literacy instruction techniques
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage various tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience in creating content for blogs, newsletters, or presentations.
- Proficiency with productivity tools such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, etc.· Knowledge of literacy programs or the nonprofit sector (preferred but not required).
