What are the responsibilities and job description for the Loss Control Specialist position at IAT Insurance Group?
IAT Insurance Group has an immediate need for a Loss Control Specialist to evaluate complex accounts against industry loss control practices within the Pacific Northwest & Western United States territory. This role will also identify and document hazards, exposures, and potential loss-causing activities or operations, evaluate clients' safety-related programs, and make recommendations as required.
The ideal candidate will be a subject matter expert with all loss control practices with an understanding of P&C products. This role works a hybrid schedule from an IAT office. Remote will be considered for the ideal candidates. The hybrid schedule reflects our values (thinking and acting like an owner, collaboration, and teamwork) as it requires working from the office with colleagues and other disciplines Monday through Wednesday, with the option of working remotely on Thursday and Friday.

Responsibilities:
- Visits existing or prospective customer business locations and evaluates operations based on industry loss control practices. Discusses business, policies, practices, and other relevant information necessary to understand business and risks fully. Surveys and values facilities, equipment, and overall business operations. Also evaluates risks against industry standards and recommends solutions and services that will support the policyholder in reducing and/or preventing future losses.
- Analyze loss history before site visits to understand the industry, line of business, or historical loss information for the client. Analyzes and evaluates policyholder loss data to determine loss causes and trends. Recommends those services that will support the policyholder in reducing and/or preventing future losses.
- Creates comprehensive written survey reports and recommendations that address hazards and controls associated with customer’s business and insurance needs and coverage.
- Provides risk assessment and recommendations regarding risk selection to underwriting for evaluation and pricing.
- Markets and demonstrates IAT's industry expertise and commitment to the Transportation industry, specifically in the Truck and Moving & Storage space.
- Makes follow-up visits and provides loss control services that assist and support customers in meeting their own goals. Services include management information - research and analysis to solve management problems; accident investigation and recordkeeping; safety management training; special surveys; workplace surveys; other services - specialized training aids/material. Utilizes loss information to prioritize projects and field services.
- Provides basic technical training and consulting to business/policyholders, underwriting staff, agency force, claims, etc. to help mitigate risks, reinforce standards and practices, increase business opportunities, educate regarding loss reduction.
- Conducts presentations for existing or prospective customers to assist sales, marketing, and agency partners with sales and/or retention efforts.
- Able to travel up to 80% of the time.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Must Have:
- BS/BA degree or equivalent and at least eight years of loss control experience.
- Equivalent is defined as having twelve years of relevant loss control experience.
- Experience in the Transportation or Trucking Industry.
- Able to obtain licenses and certifications as state laws and regulations require.
- Able to obtain one or more of the following designations: Certified Safety Professional, Certified Director of Safety (CDS), Certified Transportation Professional (CTP), Associate of Loss Control Management, Associate Safety Professional, or Associate in Risk Management.
- Current knowledge of loss control policies, practices, and procedures.
- Current knowledge of safety, environment, and construction concepts and principles.
- Current knowledge of regulatory standards (OSHA, DOT) and local and national codes (NFPA).
- Strong relationship, marketing, and consulting skills required to interact with underwriting agents, claim professionals, policyholders, managers, third parties, and team members.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to operate a personal computer and other business equipment, prioritize work, and meet deadlines.
- Physically capable of climbing ladders and stairs and walking on uneven surfaces in various weather conditions.
- Able to travel up to 80% of the time.
- To qualify, all applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require, now or in the future, VISA sponsorship for employment purposes.
Preferred:
- DOT/transportation experience.
- Relevant Policy or Underwriting Experience.
- Have obtained one or more of the following designations: Certified Safety Professional, Certified Director of Safety (CDS), Certified Transportation Professional (CTP), Associate of Loss Control Management, Associate Safety Professional, or Associate in Risk Management.
- Commercial loss control, safety, industrial health, or fire protection experience.
