Position Summary
This is a CONTRACT position. The MAS Nurse is a highly competent, valuable member of our professional healthcare team who adheres to the requirements set forth by the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) and the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) for the Medication Assistance Certification (MAC) training program. The primary role is to ensure safe and accurate administration of medications, perform proper delegation of nursing tasks to unlicensed staff, and supervise MAC workers.
Qualifications
- Unencumbered RN license issued by the Alabama Board of Nursing
- Completion of the ABN-approved training to become an MAS Nurse in ADMH Community Programs
- Graduate of a Nursing Degree from an accredited college
- CPR certification and CPI training
- Experience in medication administration supervision preferred
- Strong knowledge of medication management and administration protocols
- Excellent documentation and record-keeping skills
- Effective communication and leadership abilities
Primary Responsibilities
- Supervise MAC (Medication Assistance Certification) staff in medication administration
- Train and evaluate MAC workers on proper medication administration procedures
- Conduct quarterly evaluations of MAC workers
- Provide ongoing education and remediation as needed
- Be physically present in the facility and readily accessible to designate or prescribe a course of action or to give procedural guidance, direction, and periodic evaluation
- Be available for periodic inspection and evaluation through physical presence and electronic or telephonic communication for direction, consultation, and collaboration at all times
Clinical Duties
- Complete Annual Nursing Assessments, Self-Medication Assessments, Choking Risk Assessments, AIMS, and Fall Assessments
- Complete Focal and Comprehensive Assessments
- Provide physical care and carry out therapeutic and medical regimens
- Accept doctors' orders for persons served and notify administrative staff, direct care staff, and QIDPs of any significant changes in condition
- Obtain patient histories and medical information
- Assess, report, and record vital signs, measurements, and blood sugar levels
- Observe persons for physical or emotional changes; report and document any extreme changes
- Administer injectable medications and perform sterile procedures
- Assess and monitor wounds, perform dressing changes
- Remove staples and sutures
- Develop, implement, and follow through on plans of care for people in services
- Respond to and report medical emergencies
- Schedule and coordinate patient appointments and medical tests
- Be available for emergency calls and PRN medication calls
- Conduct hospital follow-ups and discharges
- Complete new admission paperwork
Medication Administration Management
- Oversee the facility's medication administration system
- Verify medication orders, ensure proper labeling, and check medication counts
- Ensure compliance with the "Seven Rights" of medication administration
- Maintain and update Medication Administration Records (MARs)
- Administer medications per prescriptions, standing orders, or verbal orders received from a physician as needed
- Manage controlled substances according to protocols, including double-lock storage and shift counts
- Respond to medication-related emergencies and adverse reactions
- Monitor Therap Health Tracking
- Reconcile person-served medications monthly and as needed
Documentation & Compliance
- Review, update, and maintain medical records
- Complete and process medical documentation
- Ensure proper storage of medications according to requirements
- Verify that prescriptions are kept current and updated at least annually
- Monitor seizure activity documentation and follow appropriate protocols
- Ensure proper notifications for PRN medication administration
- Oversee destruction of expired or discontinued medications
- Maintain compliance with all applicable laws and regulations regarding inventory, storage, documentation, and administration of medication
- Conduct group home audits
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and pharmacies to ensure all prescribed orders are carried out
- Communicate with team members, staff, and natural supports regarding the healthcare of the people served
- Attend in-service education programs, staff meetings, etc.
- Provide MAC training

- Electronic Health Records (EHR) software, Therap Health Tracking, and pharmacy systems
- Medication administration tools and assessment instruments
- Training materials for MAC worker supervision and community-based healthcare programs
Protective Equipment Required
- Some duties may require protective gloves, masks, scrubs, lab coats, or other protective medical attire
- May be required to wear additional protective gear when training MAC workers or conducting medical assessments
Physical Demands and Work Conditions
- Medium physical demand: walking and sitting most of the time on duty
- Hearing to distinguish differences in heartbeat and breathing of patients
- Near-visual activity to read gauges
- Color vision for perceiving changes in patients' skin color and color of medications and solutions
- Motor coordination and manual dexterity to coordinate hands, eyes, and fingers
