Description:

The entry-level cybersecurity analyst position provides hands-on experience working in the security operations center (SOC) and with governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC) principles under the supervision of experienced SOC and GRC leaders . This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about cybersecurity and eager to learn, with the goal of growing into a fully qualified cybersecurity professional.

The entry-level cybersecurity analyst could be asked to:
  • support the day-to-day operations of the security operations center (SOC), working alongside experienced professionals to detect, analyze, and respond to cybersecurity incidents; or
  • support governance, risk management, and compliance initiatives working alongside experienced professionals to identify appropriate governance frameworks, provide risk mitigation strategies, and determine whether personnel and organizations conduct themselves in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines.
Depending on need, this role involves
(1) monitoring networks and systems for malicious activity, assisting in incident response, and gaining hands-on experience with security tools, technologies, and processes or
(2) developing policies and procedures, conducting risk assessments, and evaluating compliance with frameworks such as HIPAA, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 . The apprentice will receive mentoring, training, and guidance to develop the skills necessary for a career in cybersecurity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Security Monitoring:
    • Monitor network traffic, system logs, and security alerts to identify potential security threats or incidents.
    • Assist in the operation of Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools to correlate and analyze data.
    • Respond to alerts and incidents according to established procedures.
  • Incident Response Support:
    • Participate in incident response efforts, including investigating and documenting incidents.
    • Work with senior analysts to escalate and mitigate security incidents.
    • Assist in post-incident analysis and reporting to prevent future occurrences.
  • Threat Intelligence:
    • Support the gathering, analyzing, and sharing of threat intelligence data.
    • Assist in creating reports and briefings on the current threat landscape.
  • Security Awareness:
    • Participate in security awareness programs, learning and reinforcing cybersecurity best practices.
    • Assist in creating awareness material for end users and internal teams.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate documentation of security incidents, responses, and outcomes.
    • Assist in creating and updating SOC playbooks, workflows, and reports.
  • Tool and Technology Use:
    • Gain hands-on experience with SOC tools, such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), endpoint protection platforms (EPP), and vulnerability scanners.
    • Assist in configuring and maintaining SOC tools under the supervision of senior team members.
  • Governance
    • Read about cybersecurity laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines.
    • Write cybersecurity policies and procedures.
  • Risk Management
    • Identify threats, vulnerabilities, impact levels, and calculate risk.
    • Develop risk assessment reports.
  • Compliance
    • Perform gap assessments.
    • Research risk mitigation solutions.

Key Requirements and Qualifications:

Education:
  • BS degree with cybersecurity major, cybersecurity minor, or at least 15 credit hours of cybersecurity coursework
Certifications:
  • None
Skills and Competencies:
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, routing).
  • Familiarity with operating systems, particularly Linux and Windows.
  • A strong desire to learn about cybersecurity, incident response, and GRC principles.
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and follow instructions from senior SOC and GRC personnel.
  • Basic knowledge of security threats, vulnerabilities, and risk management concepts is an advantage.
Volunteer requirement:
  • Have a willingness to participate in monthly volunteer efforts that benefit the environment and humanity.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in cybersecurity is a plus but not required.
  • Previous exposure to SOC environments, SIEM tools, network monitoring, or GRC activities is beneficial.
