Job Summary:
This role is responsible for the technical design, development, and implementation of systems required for the operation of critical infrastructure DNS services (L.ROOT-SERVERS.NET) provided for the Internet by our company. The engineer ensures that all systems are functioning optimally and supports the development of new technologies and system requirements. The Engineer may contribute to project outcomes.
The Infrastructure Engineer contributes to the development and implementation of systems required for the operation of critical and enterprise infrastructure for ICANN. They hold, and further develop, subject matter expertise in relevant technologies and can interact effectively with staff and stakeholders at an appropriate level.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
- Work with management and department leaders on business issues requiring expert technical knowledge, where near- and long-term analysis of situations requires evaluation of intangibles.
- Support DNS Engineering projects by ensuring adherence to project scope, timeline, resources, and budget.
- Implement DevOps methodologies, including CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code, and automation to enhance scalability, reliability, and efficiency.
- Contribute to high standards of documentation related to design, configuration, processes, and procedures in line with department goals of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM).
- Implement policies, procedures, and associated plans for DNS administration, usage, and disaster recovery.
- Provide support and expertise in continuous integration and delivery processes, integrating DNS and network services into DevOps pipelines.
- Engage in the review processes for new systems or infrastructure and document the technical operations of new infrastructure across the entire E&IT function.
- Contribute to creating detailed plans for the integration of new infrastructure into or replacing existing infrastructure, including logistical plans and providing technical direction and support.
- Support the evaluation of new and existing infrastructure activities and projects based on best architectural practices and identify new best practices and lessons learned. Provide balanced feedback to leadership for future integration.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

- Strong knowledge in DNS, DNSSEC, and Domain Portfolio Management.
- Advanced understanding of DevOps practices, including Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, and automation strategies for efficient infrastructure management.
- Expertise in automating infrastructure processes using configuration management frameworks.
- Proficiency in scripting languages to automate and optimize infrastructure processes.
- Advanced knowledge of Linux/Unix systems administration, with a focus on automation and security practices.
- Good understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, etc.) and routing, particularly in relation to DNS-related networking.
- Knowledge of ITIL strategy, CMM targets, network and systems security, infrastructure components, and internet protocols.
- Strong communication skills enabling remote work with colleagues across different countries.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- 8 years of related industry experience.
- 5 years of experience in DNS infrastructure.
- Active affiliations with network operations groups and the DNS community.
