The Day Program Driver is responsible for providing safe and reliable transportation for individuals with developmental disabilities to and from the day program, as well as to community outings and events. The driver ensures the safety and well-being of members during transportation, adheres to all traffic laws, and assists individuals with boarding and exiting the vehicle as needed. The driver plays a crucial role in promoting independence and community involvement by supporting members' transportation needs.
The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with individuals with developmental disabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Transportation Services:
- Provide transportation for members to and from the day program, community outings, medical appointments, and other program-related activities.
- Ensure that members are picked up and dropped off at designated locations and times in accordance with the day program schedule.
- Assist members with boarding and exiting the vehicle, including helping those with mobility challenges or using assistive devices such as wheelchairs.
- Follow assigned routes and adjust as needed to accommodate changes in members' schedules or program activities.
- Member Safety and Well-Being:
- Ensure the safety and security of all passengers during transport by following all traffic laws, safety regulations, and program policies.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure the vehicle is safe and operational, including checking brakes, lights, tires, and fuel levels.
- Report any vehicle issues or maintenance needs to the Transportation Coordinator or supervisor promptly.
- Ensure that seat belts and safety restraints are used by all passengers, including securing wheelchair tie-downs when needed.
- Assistance and Support:
- Provide assistance to members as needed, including helping them to their door, carrying bags, or providing guidance with mobility.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with members, ensuring that they feel safe and comfortable during the ride.
- Monitor members’ well-being during transportation, reporting any concerns, changes in behavior, or incidents to the Day Program Manager or other appropriate staff.
- Use positive communication techniques to create a friendly and supportive atmosphere during transportation.
- Record Keeping and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate transportation logs, including pick-up/drop-off times, mileage, and any incidents or issues that occur during transport.
- Complete daily and weekly transportation reports as required by the organization.
- Report any accidents, incidents, or concerns immediately to the appropriate staff and document them according to organizational policies.
- Vehicle Maintenance:
- Ensure that the vehicle is kept clean and well-maintained, including scheduling regular maintenance and cleaning inside and outside of the vehicle.
- Refuel the vehicle as needed and keep accurate records of fuel expenses and mileage.
- Ensure that the vehicle is stocked with emergency supplies, such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and any member-specific needs.
- Emergency Preparedness:
- Be prepared to respond to emergencies, such as medical situations or vehicle breakdowns, following program protocols.
- Ensure members' safety and comfort in the event of an emergency, and notify the proper authorities or staff as needed.
- Participate in emergency drills and training sessions to stay updated on safety procedures
Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
Experience:
- 1-2 years of experience in a driving role, preferably in passenger transportation (required).
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or in a healthcare setting (preferred but not required).
Skills and Knowledge:
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (required).
- Familiarity with local roads and routes in the service area.
- Ability to operate a multi-passenger vehicle or van safely.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with members, families, and staff.
- Basic understanding of vehicle maintenance and the ability to conduct routine inspections.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and best practices for transporting individuals with disabilities.
Required Certifications (Must Have):
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Defensive Driving Certification (preferred or willingness to obtain).

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to assist members with mobility, including pushing wheelchairs and helping individuals enter and exit the vehicle.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods while driving and assist members with loading and unloading items as needed.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Proficient in navigating high-stress situations by employing de-escalation techniques to achieve productive outcomes.
- Demonstrated mental and emotional acuity in managing individuals in dysregulated situations.

Additional Requirements:
- Background check clearance as required by state and federal regulations.
- Must pass a drug screening and motor vehicle record (MVR) check.

Salary Range:
