The Direct Support Professional (DSP) The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides habilitation services to individuals with developmental disabilities to help them achieve greater independence and improve their quality of life. This role involves ensures that clients achieve greater independence, enhance their quality of life, and develop essential life skills within their home and community environments.

Key Responsibilities:
- Habilitation Services:
- Develop and implement individualized support plans to help clients acquire or maintain essential life skills (e.g., cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and personal hygiene).
- Provide direct assistance in achieving personal goals as outlined in the client’s Individualized Service Plan (ISP).
- Skill Development:
- Assist individuals in developing life skills such as cooking, cleaning, bathing, dressing, meal preparation, housekeeping, and personal hygiene.
- Provide support with social skills, communication, and decision-making activities.
- Implementation of Care Plans:
- Follow individual habilitation plans/goals in the PCSP to meet established goals.
- Record progress and document daily activities as required.
- Personal Care Assistance:
- Support with personal hygiene, dressing, bathing, and toileting when necessary.
- Encourage independence while providing assistance in tasks.
- Behavioral Support:
- Apply behavioral strategies outlined in the care plan to address challenging behaviors.
- Use positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors.
- Community Integration:
- Accompany individuals to community activities, appointments, and events.
- Support participation in recreational and social activities to enhance community involvement.
- Health and Safety:
- Monitor individuals’ health and report any changes or concerns to the supervisor.
- Administer medications if certified and as required.
- Ensure a safe and clean-living environment.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and timely records of activities, progress, and incidents.
- Communicate effectively with team members, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Submit quarterly report to the Support Coordinator.
Key Expectations for Habilitation Services:
- Teaching Independence:
- Design and implement structured activities that teach self-help skills (e.g., managing finances, cooking meals).
- Promoting Social Interaction:
- Encourage participation in group activities and foster positive relationships in community settings.
- Assistance with Behavioral Goals:
- Monitor behavior improvement and adapt techniques to meet individual progress markers outlined in the plan.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Experience: Minimum of 6 months’ prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities (preferred).
- Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, positive attitude, and a commitment to client well-being.
- Address challenges with creative solutions, ensuring the individual’s safety and well-being.
- Work closely with caregivers, healthcare providers, and other professionals to provide integrated support services.
- Certifications:
- CPR and First Aid Certification
- Article 9
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to assist individuals with physical activities, including personal care, mobility support, and transfers as needed.
- Must be able to engage in physical activities with individuals, including recreational activities, outings, and exercise.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, based on the needs of the program.
- Physical demands include lifting to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
- Proficient in navigating high-stress situations by employing de-escalation techniques to achieve productive outcomes.
- Demonstrated mental and emotional acuity in managing individuals in dysregulated situations.
- Finger and manual dexterity.
