The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides high-quality respite care services to individuals with developmental disabilities, offering temporary relief to their primary caregivers. Services are provided as a planned or unplanned non-routine interval of rest and/or relief. The DSP supports individuals in achieving their personal goals, maintaining safety, and fostering independence in a compassionate and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Care and Support:
- Provide supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of individuals receiving respite services.
- Assist with grocery shopping and other errands.
- Assist with daily living activities, including meal preparation, dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene, as needed.
- Engage individuals in recreational and social activities to promote enrichment and well-being.
- Individualized Support:
- Follow individualized support plans and behavior management strategies to meet the unique needs of each individual.
- Encourage independence while providing assistance and guidance in achieving personal goals.
- Communication:
- Maintain clear and respectful communication with individuals, families, and caregivers.
- Report any changes in health, behavior, or circumstances to supervisors and caregivers promptly.
- Documentation:
- Complete daily activity logs, incident reports, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory guidelines.
- Environment Maintenance:
- Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment during respite care sessions.
- Use and maintain adaptive equipment or assistive devices as needed.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure a safe environment by adhering to safety protocols and reporting any hazards.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold the rights and dignity of clients.
- Transportation and Community Access:
- Drive clients to appointments, grocery shopping, and community events.
- Facilitate participation in recreational or vocational activities.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Experience: Minimum of 6 months’ prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities (preferred).
- Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and transferring clients.
- Patience, empathy, positive attitude, and a commitment to client well-being.
- Certifications:
- CPR and First Aid Certification
- Article 9
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to assist individuals with physical activities, including personal care, mobility support, and transfers as needed.
- Must be able to engage in physical activities with individuals, including recreational activities, outings, and exercise.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, based on the needs of the program.
- Physical demands include lifting to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
- Proficient in navigating high-stress situations by employing de-escalation techniques to achieve productive outcomes.
- Demonstrated mental and emotional acuity in managing individuals in dysregulated situations.
- Finger and manual dexterity.
