Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Advanced Structural Materials Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in our Irradiated Fuels and Materials department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

You will provide research and development technical support for INL programs aimed at advancing leadership in nuclear energy science and technology development, primarily for, but not limited to, advanced fission reactor technologies. Responsibilities will span a wide range of activities including computational and experimental efforts leveraging INL’s high performance computing resources, collaborations with experimentalists at other national laboratories, and engineering teams for irradiations in the Advanced Test Reactor. The successful candidate will conduct research and development activities to advance the state of the art in quantifying and predicting radiation damage of advanced structural alloys. These efforts will aid in developing new materials for extreme environments and in rapid qualification of materials for irradiation effects, to be funded primarily by programs under the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and execution of unique and custom irradiation and post irradiation examination experiments with innovative strategies to maximize data utilization for cross-cutting qualification efforts.
  • Perform atomistic and continuum-scale modeling of radiation damage and microstructure evolution processes systems and utilize machine learning techniques as appropriate in complex alloys.
  • Meet environmental, health, and safety goals, ensuring all work is performed in an environmentally safe and compliant manner.
  • Participate in research planning by contributing to project planning and review meetings.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and participate in conference activities.
  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a related field. Must have completed degree within the past five years.
  • Hands-on experience with density functional theory, molecular dynamics, kinetic Monte Carlo, and machine learning.
  • Experience with radiation damage in structural alloys and with computational and experimental investigations of ternary and greater alloy systems.
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of experimental methods to obtain microstructural information and materials properties for irradiated materials.
  • Experience with cluster dynamics modeling.
  • Experience with mechanical testing of subsized specimens.
