Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Aeronautical Engineer to work in our National Security Solutions Department. Our team works a 9x80 or 4x10 schedule located out of Idaho Falls, at our REC facility with every other Friday off. You will report to the department Manager.

Support tasks related to the planning and design of aircraft and accessories such as engines, frames, fuselages, instruments, communications equipment, and controls. Create, construct and test models or prototypes to identify flight characteristics. Prepare detailed reports evaluating projects including recommendations.

Responsibilities Include

Design and perform independent experiments to support UAV R&D, and evaluate experimental results.

Publish results in technical reports, trade journal publications, and peer-reviewed journal articles.

Support development of DOE research agenda for autonomous vehicles (ground, air, water), including the integration of UAS with other autonomous systems.

Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements.

Design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to establish a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.

Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design.

Maintain familiarity with and technical understanding of codes and standards applicable to the discipline.

Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, and design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.

Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure technical features important to design are maintained.

Ensure that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement are done observing the design.

Maintain safety and security controls following INL, sponsor, DOE, and federal policies and regulations.

Provide technical support to DOE's Office of Aviation Management. Tasks include preparing and submitting FAA Certificates of Authorization (COAs), advising DOE, other national laboratories, and other external organizations on the process of securing COAs and planning safe, efficient UAV flight operations.

Prepare and make presentations at sponsor reviews and national technical meetings.

Participate in external professional activities such as: professional society committee membership, organization of conference sessions, or other significant national research leadership activities.

Be an expert in our UAS and intelligent systems.

Develop new business opportunities for the UAS program, including supporting CAES Autonomous Systems Center of Excellence business growth. Prepare proposals for new business and work with sponsors and customers.

Manage scope, budget, schedule tracking, and customer/sponsor interfaces for programmatic activities.

Maintain the current INL UAS fleet. Conducting/directing UAS test flights for internal and external customers.

Work with internal and external customers to understand their needs and defining work plan to meet needs.

Mentor junior and mid-grade professional staff and technicians.

Minimum Requirements

You have Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science from an ABET-accredited institution.

Experience commensurate with level, including UAS autopilot/sensor integration and ground station operation.

EX3 - Bachelor’s and 5 years of experience. Master’s and 2 years of experience. and Ph.D 2 years of experience.

EX4 - Bachelor’s and 9 years of experience. Master’s and 6 years of experience. and Ph..D and 4 years of experience.

Currently holds a TS SCI

You will be asked to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

You have the below.

  • A private pilot license for UAS flight.
  • DoD or University UAS flight operations experience.

Job Information

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 3 ($75,804 - $155,496) / Level 4 ($91,008 - $186,588). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience.
