Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fire Marshal (AHJ) to work in our Environment, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) department. Our team works onsite in Idaho Falls, Idaho with a 9x80 schedule with every other Friday off. You will report to the Director .
You will be our laboratory Fire Marshal and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for the Fire Protection (FP) discipline within the Occupational Safety and Health Management System. You will have be assigned AHJ responsibilities from the Department of Energy (DOE), Idaho field office (DOE-ID).

You will be our laboratory Fire Marshal and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for the Fire Protection (FP) discipline within the Occupational Safety and Health Management System. You will have be assigned AHJ responsibilities from the Department of Energy (DOE), Idaho field office (DOE-ID).
Responsibilities Include
- Maintain a highly advanced understanding and application of fire protection principles and provide code interpretation for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, prepare Authority Having Jurisdiction records, serve as the fire protection compliance enforcement authority, serve as the liaison to DOE by review and concurrence with requests for equivalencies and exemptions submitted for approval to DOE or the City of Idaho Falls code official.
- Approve equivalencies /alternatives to DOE-STD-1066 for non-nuclear, non-radiological facilities, approve listing for equipment, materials and services, approve the Hot Work Procedure, review and approval of specifications, design drawings and acceptance test plans, and provide oversight by witness acceptance testing of fire protection systems.
- Maintain a highly advanced understanding and application of Fire Protection principles and codes.
- Communicate with facility and operational management, DOE headquarters, DOE-ID, and the City of Idaho Falls Fire Marshal.
- Fire Marshal has AHJ authority as assigned by DOE-ID. Stop work on any activity or operation when continued operations are deemed unsafe or result in a concern.
- Approve Fire Hazard Analyses.
- Provide written reports to the OS&H home organization including CDRLs and Fire Incident reports. Review Fire Hazard Analyses.
- Help with Fire protection engineers’ performance reviews.
- Broad expertise with consultative direction, no direct reports.
- Train and mentor staff.
- Level 4: Bachelors in an engineering discipline from an accredited engineering (or engineering technology) curriculum and 9 years Fire Protection Engineering experience, or Master's Degree and 6 years Fire Protection Engineering experience.
- Level 5: Bachelors in an engineering discipline from an accredited engineering (or engineering technology) curriculum and 14 years Fire Protection Engineering experience or Master's Degree and 8 years Fire Protection Engineering experience.
- Meet minimum Qualifications in DOE-STD-1066-2016 for a Lead Fire Protection Engineer.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License
- The pay range for this position is: Level 4 ($111,888- $229,284 - $) / Level 5 ($134,124 - $275,136). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
- TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
