Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a Station Control Technician Apprentice or Journeyman to join our Substation Construction team. What does a Station Control Technician Apprentice or Journeyman do for us?
They install, commission, and troubleshoot substation and power plant control systems, including system monitoring equipment, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Sequence of Events Recorder (SER), Digital Fault Recorder (DFR), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Remedial Action Schemes (RAS), Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI), and protective relay, control, and communication systems.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
  • OSHA regulations, chemical safety, electrical safety related work practices
  • Electrical circuits, electronics, algebra, and trigonometry
  • Utility system practices and utility business practices
  • Substation and power plant construction, operations, maintenance, and safety practices
  • AC and DC circuit theory, wiring diagrams, control schematics, and other drawings such as station construction prints with electrical, mechanical, and structural details
  • Batteries, protective controls, and other equipment relative to station control
  • Power transformers, load tap changers, and potential and current transformers
  • Power circuit breakers, metal-clad switchgear, circuit switchers, disconnect and air break switches, synchronous condensers, series and shunt capacitors, AC & DC controls
  • Electrical test equipment (multi-meter, volt-ohm meter, current sources, breaker simulator, etc.) and testing methods, and troubleshooting techniques
  • Safe grounding practices and mitigation of induced voltage
  • Specific control systems, schemes, and equipment utilized in distribution and transmission voltage level systems
  • Stations and power plant equipment installation adhering to internal Stations Engineering & Design and Stations Construction Specifications
  • Personal computer use and basic software

  • Organization and time management
Ability to:
  • Work a hitch schedule – 8 days traveling to different areas within our service territories, 6 consecutive days off
  • Read and understand station drawings
  • Properly correct and document changes to station drawings
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Work in a team environment, as well as independently and be self-motivated and flexible
  • Work with a high degree of accountability
  • Meet established project deadlines
  • Apply established guidelines and use good judgment and initiative in resolving work problems

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Apprentice
Education:
  • High school diploma or GED and vocational degree in an electrical or construction discipline
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, work experience, related formal apprenticeship training, or military training in an electrical or construction discipline
OR
  • Currently employed as an Idaho Power Pre-Apprentice Stations Technician
Experience:
  • 2 or more years work experience in an electrical or control wiring field
Licenses & Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Valid Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days or hire
Preferred:
  • Journeyman electrician certification
  • Bureau of Office of Apprenticeship (OA) Certification in an Electrical Technician Apprentice program
  • AAS in electrical or electronic systems or equivalent
  • Confined space training
  • Fall restraint training
Journeyman
Education:
  • High School diploma or GED and vocational degree in an electrical or construction discipline
OR
  • State recognized Journeyman Electrician License
OR
  • Completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience
Experience:
  • 5 or more years of work experience in an electrical or control wiring field
  • 3 or more years of control wiring experience in substations or completion of a Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship (OA) Substation program
Licenses & Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Valid DOT medical card or the ability to obtain one prior to hire
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days of hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position performs manual dexterity tasks and repetitive gripping (up to 80 lbs. force) in utilizing hand tools on a frequent basis to assemble electrical components and control panels. Lifting of up to 110 lbs. and pushing/pulling up to 60 lbs. is required occasionally. Sustained postures are required with crouching, kneeling, bending/stooping, twisting, and reaching to access areas of control panels. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the DOT medical certificate. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. This job may require the performance of additional tasks assigned by company leaders or management. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Apprentices will immediately enroll in the Stations Technician Apprenticeship Program.
Additional job and safety- related training may be required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This position is a member of the Stations Construction department and may be assigned to work in an electrical shop, on a control wiring crew, structural crew, mobile apparatus crew, or combo crew that does both control wiring and structural work in substations. The crew this position is assigned to may change at any time depending on business need.

This position requires extensive travel across Idaho Power’s service area. The work schedule for this position may change week to week. Each workday may require be an out-of-town, overnight stay. This position requires the ability to work overtime and weekends for emergencies or when business need requires. Apprentices work in various conditions, including confined spaces, heights of over 80 feet, and inclement weather. Must abide by Idaho Power Company's safety rules and regulations. Complete required Company and safety training.
