DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

Museum Educators are an important part of the Education Team. They assist in the teaching and implementation of on-going programs within multiple disciplines targeted to PreK-12th grade students, teachers, youth groups, families, and adult audiences. This role also engages visitors from early childhood to adult in inquiry-based experiences based on the museum’s collection and exhibitions.

This position will work Tuesday- Saturday shifts between 9am-5pm. It will require occasional evening work, as needed.

The Museum Educator reports to the Curator of Education.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Deliver daily greetings, tours and classroom workshops for PreK-12th grade school and youth groups visiting the Museum both in-person and virtually.
  • Facilitate camp, family, and outreach programming for the Museum
  • Support the Education Specialist and the Curator of Education in writing lesson plans for interactive museum programs consisting of hands-on activities and inquiry-driven lessons in alignment with the Agency’s Strategic Plan.
  • Participates in the Education Department as an active member to assess and plan for audience needs including differentiation and evaluation.
  • Track and maintain program supplies and communicate with the Education Specialist if materials need to be purchased or replaced
  • Continual study of the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, and content to ensure a thorough understanding of Idaho and its history
  • Provide support as needed for National History Day in Idaho regional and state competitions
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and efficient work environment
  • Attend museum trainings and other professional development opportunities
  • Provide support to agency public programs and outreach efforts as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/ SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED, undergraduate degree coursework in progress preferred
  • At least one year of experience teaching students in a formal or informal education program (i.e. camp instructor, teacher, coach)
  • Ability to teach a class size group of students and experience with different age groups is preferred
  • Warmth, positive energy, and a sincere love of working with youth and their families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Interest in history, education, museum studies, anthropology, or a related field
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook, and relevant database software
  • Excellent communication skills, including telephone, interpersonal, and written skills.
  • Ability to accept guidance, direction, and supervision; able to give feedback and share ideas appropriately and professionally
  • Able to interact professionally and appropriately with staff, volunteers, and the public
  • Command of a second language preferred but not required
