Job Description
To care for laboratory animals used in university teaching and research projects; perform related work. This position works 30 hours per week, requiring some weekends and holidays.
Typical Duties
The successful candidate feeds, waters, and exercises laboratory animals; cleans facilities and animal cages; observes animals for symptoms of disease or illness; participates in obtaining blood, urine, and fecal samples; administers injections and other treatments; restrains and prepares animals for operating procedures; provides post-operative care; performs euthanasia on various species of animals; operates incinerator, sterilizer, and cage washing machines; quarantines animal shipments; maintains small animal colonies; records animal immunizations, breeding, and research projects; repairs cages and enclosures; transports animals between buildings; maintains inventory of supplies and animals; consults with veterinarian regarding animal care; advises students and faculty on animal care; trains and supervises part-time helpers.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
- Caring for animals.
- Reading, writing and following written and oral instructions.
Specialty Requirement
- Some positions at ISU require a valid driver's license.
Supplemental Information
- Employees are exposed to infectious diseases and toxic materials including pentobarbital.
- They are subject to emergency call-back after normal working hours, on weekends, and holidays.
- Work is performed in damp, hot, and odorous surroundings.
- Employees are required to handle, restrain, and care for laboratory animals including rodents, dogs, cats, and rabbits and must administer medications and be willing to perform euthanasia on animals.
- These positions involve exposure to diseased animals who may bite or scratch and employees are subjected to annual medical monitoring.
- These positions involve lifting and carrying 50 pounds. These positions involve standing and walking for the majority of an eight hour shift.
Additional Information
ISU minimum for this classification is $15.50/hour.
