Job Description

The Assistant Athletic Trainer is a highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professional who renders services or treatment to student-athletes, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training, & the state’s statutes, rules & regulations. We are primarily responsible for the delivery of the healthcare system to student-athletes. This care includes prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries or illnesses sustained during supervised athletic participation and activities and also determine the proper course of treatment to return the athlete to a healthy, competitive level. Oversee not only the physical but the mental aspects of the student-athletes health & well-being while participating in collegiate athletics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in establishing, coordinating, supervising, and monitoring athletic training services to student-athletes.
  • Responsible for the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for student-athletes
  • In consultation with the Head Athletic Trainer and in cooperation with other Assistant Athletic Trainers, operates within the facility operational budget.
  • Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in the routine operation of a designated athletic training facility.
  • Assists the Head Athletic Trainer in the selection, assignment, orientation, retention, and supervision of athletic training staff. Coordinates the selection, assignment, orientation, retention, and mentoring of graduate assistant athletic trainers/interns with the Head Athletic Trainer
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with coordination and administration of the athletic training program in a manner that provides for competent and complete medical care for all student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics
  • Work cooperatively with, and under, the direction of the team physician in respect to the operation of the therapeutic devices and equipment, fitting of braces, guards, or other devices, referrals to physicians, health service or hospital
  • Attend daily practices to assist with athletic training for the student-athletes
  • Attend and work home and away games as the Athletic trainer
  • Advise student-athletes of methods designed to maximize injury prevention
  • Work as directed by team physicians, supervising athletics trainer, and with the head coach and strength and conditioning staff
  • Coordinate with the Strength and Conditioning staff about student-athletes injuries that may prevent them from completing their lifting program & coordinate modifications that may be needed to ensure safety
  • Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications
  • Develop strategies to address mental health and coordinate the utilization of campus resources to enhance the overall wellness of student-athletes
  • Comply with all Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Idaho State University, Big Sky Conference, NCAA and State Practice Act rules and regulations
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer, Senior Associate AD for Compliance/Student Services, and/or the Director of Athletics
  • Any other duty that may be initiated as requested by the Head Athletic Trainer

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Currently NATABOC certification - (National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification)
  • Experience evaluating athletic injuries and selecting proper treatment methods
  • Eligible for licensing by the Board of Athletic Training in the State of Idaho
  • CPR/AED certification
  • Demonstrated understanding of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to build strong internal and external relationships
  • Work is physically demanding, candidates must be able to lift 100 pounds with or without accommodations Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects is required. Medium strength is required to position patients for examination and assisting patients as needed
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays in excess of the standard university work week

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field
  • Two years’ work related experience post certification
  • Knowledge of and understanding of collegiate athletics
  • Proven ability to communicate with collegiate student-athletes
  • Working knowledge of NCAA drug policy, testing regulations and supplements
  • Demonstrated competence using various computer software
  • Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision
  • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions is essential
  • The ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situations when talking to patients, medical professionals, staff and families is critical

Salary will be between $47,325 - $49,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
