Job Description
The TRIO Upward Bound Advisor and Programming Coordinator will establish, coordinate, and conduct activities to provide services and support to high school students from low-income backgrounds and/or will be the first in their families to attend college. The successful candidate will provide services to current participants and recruit new students during weekly high school visits, assist in the planning and implementation of the 6-week residential summer program, oversee the programming component (i.e. enrichment activities and events) of the summer residential program and academic year Saturday sessions, and work in collaboration with four other UB/UBMS staff to develop policies and processes.
Requires frequent night and weekend work. This is a 12-month position based on the Pocatello campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a caseload of 50 students by recruiting participants and documenting eligibility. Communicate with parents about the program and application process.
- Develop and maintain working and trusting relationships with participants while ensuring substantial services are received.
- Maintain accurate, thorough, and confidential records for participants.
- Ongoing review of student caseload including: student progress as it relates to needs
program, scholarships received, financial aid received, etc.
- Maintain student files with all necessary physical documentation to ensure compliance
Academic Services:
- Provide weekly academic assistance at target schools, such as class selection, study skills, goal setting, time management, academic success, and career interests.
- Provide information to students regarding postsecondary opportunities and assist in preparation/applications, including admissions, financial aid, scholarships,
- Provide tutoring and other resources for students as needed.
Workshops, events, and college visits:
- Develop academic year curriculum for advising and programming.
- Develop, coordinate and participate in parent nights, college and career field trips (some
- Ensure that students on caseload are informed of event information and are receiving
Summer Coordination:
- Assist in the planning and implementation of the 6-week residential summer program; develop and oversee the programming component.
- Work in collaboration with staff to develop summer programming, policies, and processes.
- During the summer program, staff working for UB/UBMS are asked to be available most
assigned.
Additional Duties:
- Actively develop relationships with school personnel, businesses, and community
- Provide follow up of program services to target school personnel.
- Coordinate with other TRIO staff to ensure program compliance and success.
- Assist with all required reports and data collection.
- All other reasonable duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive state vehicles or rental vehicles for school
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with high school students, staff, and
- Background or experience aligning with that of target population
- Experience planning programming (i.e. educational and enrichment activities and
- Knowledge of career development, college admissions, and study skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree
- Knowledge of target area (Southeast Idaho)
- Knowledge of recruitment strategies for limited-income and first generation students
- Experience with state or federal record keeping
- Experience studying or working in a STEM field
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Additional Information
