Job Summary:
The Library Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the efficient operation of a library by assisting patrons, managing library materials, and performing various administrative tasks. This position contributes to creating a welcoming and organized environment for library users.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide friendly and helpful assistance to library patrons, including answering inquiries, locating materials, and offering guidance on library services.
- Assist users in utilizing library resources, technology, and equipment.
- Process library materials for check-in, check-out, and renewals.
- Manage overdue materials, issue fines, and assist with the handling of lost or damaged items.
- Shelve returned materials accurately and efficiently, ensuring items are organized according to the library's classification system.
- Conduct shelf-reading and general shelf maintenance to ensure an orderly collection.
- Assist in the processing of new library materials, including labeling, covering, and cataloging.
- Identify and flag damaged materials for repair or replacement.
- Assist patrons with basic technology needs, such as using computers, printers, and online databases.
- Troubleshoot common issues related to library equipment and technology.
- Support library programs and events, including setup, registration, and assisting with activities.
- Collaborate with library staff in planning and executing community engagement initiatives.
- Perform data entry tasks related to library operations, including updating patron records and maintaining accurate circulation statistics.
- Generate reports and maintain records as required.
- Assist with basic reference inquiries and refer more complex questions to librarians.
- Familiarize patrons with online catalogs and databases.
Qualifications
Required Education, Skills and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework is a plus.
- Previous experience in a library setting or customer service role is desirable.
- Familiarity with library classification systems and procedures.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in using computers and basic office software.
- Customer service-oriented with a positive and helpful demeanor.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in handling library materials.
- Ability to adapt to new technologies and library management systems.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Ability and desire to work within the Idyllwild community.
- Obtain and maintain a valid California Driver License, pass a criminal history background check as required by California Education Code Section 44237.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENTS
While performing the duties of this position, an incumbent may be required to:
- Regularly remain sedentary for long periods of time in meetings and while processing information and paper work both manually and on a computer.
- Reach with the hands and arms and use of hands to finger, type, and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse.
- Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English, both written and orally, over the telephone and in person.
- Be able to make public presentations.
- Occasionally, the incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain, climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop, conduct tours, and show visitors campus facilities.
- Provide their transportation for local and remote events.
- Work hours vary and may include days, nights, and weekends.
