Idyllwild Arts Academy welcomes experienced classical collaborative pianist-pedagogues to apply to teach Collaborative Piano and perform with select instrumental and vocal students for recitals, concerts, recordings, and auditions. Our classical piano program curriculum includes significant collaborative training, and this position is a combination of teaching/coaching and playing. We seek someone who is an expert in both instrumental and vocal repertoire for piano, who can coach our piano students and their partners on their duos, and also perform with some of our instrumental and vocal students themselves. This is a unique opportunity to join a boarding school community that focuses on pre-professional training for artists while at the same time emphasizing the importance of academics. We are seeking an educator who will embrace and support the arts, and appreciate the unique environment of Idyllwild, the Academy, and its diverse and talented students.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The successful candidate will have strong classical collaborative piano performance skills, and skills in communication, organization, collaboration, and mentoring. The successful candidate will be familiar with current standards in music education in which skills acquisition, interdisciplinary approaches, and culturally responsive curriculum are integrated. This is a temporary, part-time, exempt position. Modest housing may be included for the teaching and performing days, depending on the location of the successful candidate’s current residence. This position reports to the Music Department Chair.
JOB DUTIES
Teaching/Coaching - approximately 5-10 classroom hours per week
Teaching
- Teach and grade Collaborative Piano class
- Coordinate and communicate with student pianists and their partners
Vocal Coaching
- Private and Classroom Classical Voice coaching
- May include some contemporary or Musical Theatre coaching
Collaborative Piano (Performing) - average of 2-4 hours per week
Responsibilities may include:
- Senior pre-screen recordings
- Junior and Senior recitals
- Music competitions, recordings (non-college recordings; i.e. summer festivals)
- Performing with guest artists
Administrative Duties
Responsibilities may include:
- Grading Collaborative Piano class
- Timely and professional communication with colleagues, students, and/or parents
- Coordinating senior pre-screen recording schedule
- Assisting with recruiting students for the program
- Assisting with other administrative duties as needed to include, but not limited to attending faculty, committee, or other meetings
- Additional duties as assigned by Music Dept. Chair, Assistant Head of School, or Head of School
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Position requires at least a M.M. (Master of Music) degree in Piano Performance or Collaborative Piano, and preferably a D.M.A. (Doctorate in Musical Arts or equivalent) in Piano Performance or Collaborative Piano.
- Extensive experience collaborating with classical musicians on stage
- Experience teaching/coaching piano students and/or chamber groups and/or piano-instrumental and/or piano-vocal duos

Qualifications
- Significant professional experience in both solo, chamber, and collaborative piano performance
- Experience in vocal coaching, preferably in both classical and musical theater styles
- Experience in teaching advanced level high school or college level pianists
- Experience teaching performance techniques including, but not limited to, stage presence and communication with audiences
- Experience recruiting music students helpful
- Experience living in a boarding community or experience with leading, instructing, and working with youths helpful
- Life experiences in travel, living, and/or teaching abroad
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Ability and desire to work within the Idyllwild community, Riverside County, or commute a reasonable distance, that does not impede on-time arrival during winter months.
Obtain and maintain a valid California Driver License, pass a criminal history background check as required by California Education Code Section 44237, and pass a TB test.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this position an incumbent is required to regularly remain sedentary for long periods of time in meetings, and while processing information and paper work both manually and on a computer.
Specific vision abilities include close, distance and color vision perception and the ability to adjust eye focus.
Reaching with the hands and arms and use of hands to finger, type, and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse is required.
Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English both written and orally, over a telephone and in person, and be able to make public presentations.
Occasionally, incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain and climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop, conduct tours and show visitors campus facilities.
Provide their own transportation for local and remote events. Work hours vary and include days, nights, and weekends.
