Overview

Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Blade Technician III is to perform fiberglass blade (and other fiberglass wind components) repairs, either on the ground or on a suspended platform, supporting major Wind OEMs and Asset Owners throughout North America. This role requires advanced technical expertise and experience in performing complex repairs, not limited to structural damage, ensuring the blades’ operational efficiency, safety, and longevity.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Enforce and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures
  • Travel extensively with little or no notice to customer wind farm sites.
  • Perform duties such as internal or external inspections, internal or external structural repairs and/or leading and trailing edge repairs, following procedures developed by the Blades Engineering Manager, both on the ground or on a suspended platform.
  • Mentor and train other blade technicians
  • Safely utilize blade access platforms and boom trucks to access blades uptower for repairs
  • Manage and Lead Blade repair teams in the field
  • Conduct thorough inspections and maintenance of wind turbine lightning protection systems to ensure proper functionality and compliance with safety standards. Identify and address any issues related to grounding, surge protection, and conductor systems as part of routine blade and turbine assessments
  • Document all work, pictures and procedures using Mastec Renewables’ online tools.(Donesafe, Procore, HeavyJobs, etc.)
  • Submit accurate and detailed reports in a timely manner, ensuring all relevant information is captured and communicated
  • Communicate site status effectively and promptly to Engineering, customers, and the internal Operations team.
  • Provide Lock Out Tag Out(LOTO support)
  • Identify up to 20 layers of fiber glass, ply-drop, structural glass, shear webs, carbon layers and perform a repair with minimal guidance
  • Assist in project cost management
  • Read and comprehend procedures as developed by Engineering, understand wind blade construction and repairs and ability to read electrical schematics.
  • Review lamination schedule to ensure it works with the repair at hand. Communicate any issues to the Blade Engineers or Supervisors
  • Monitor and ensure the quality of work completed and report any issues or concerns to Mastec Engineers or Supervisors
  • Provide support to onsite field team leaders when and where needed.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development to stay updated on new technology and techniques in the industry
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) and four plus years of related experience in composite work
  • Or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Training and Certifications(preferred):            
    • Tower Rescue Training
    • GWO Climb Training
    • LOTO
    • Tool Drop
    • Confined Space

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Take reasonable care of your own and others’ health and safety and of those who may be affected by the day-to-day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working toward the company’s Zero Injury principles
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, site map, and procedure manuals
  • Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; ability to perform these operations using units, weight measurement and volume
  • Ability to read and interpret a laminate schedule
  • Ability to identify different types of fiber glass and chemicals
  • Ability to understand units of force, pressure and torque and apply appropriate tooling adjustments for each
  • Ability to repair core damage with inner skin damage
  • Ability to mix components following mix ratios
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing requests
  • Proficient in converting measurements from inches to metric
  • Ability to identify and safely use different hand/power tools
  • Ability to work safely at heights, including the proper use of fall protection equipment and adherence to safety protocols
  • Knowledge of rigging techniques
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to independently diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve mechanical issues related to wind turbine blades.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, with advanced knowledge of blade systems and the capability to perform complex repairs and maintenance tasks
  • Common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Utilize Mastec Software to perform tasks assigned (Mirco Soft Office, Procore, Donesafe, Heavy Jobs…)
  • Be able to work within precise standards of accuracy and follow set procedures and standards
  • Bilingual skills (English and Spanish) preferred

Working Environment:

  • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; vibrating equipment; high, precarious places; and extreme heat and cold
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud
