This position is a senior leadership role within the Financial Services Department responsible for developing and overseeing the enterprise risk management framework and programs for IEEE, including identifying, assessing and managing the full complement of factors that could potentially put IEEE at risk. The role will also provide leadership to the organization in the area of business continuity program management through the coordination, assessment, development and communication of recovery environment requirements, and contingency plans, to protect the IEEE in the event that facilities, and/or necessary technology resources, are unavailable due to an unplanned disruption. He/She is charged with promoting / embedding risk management within IEEE's culture, and increasing the visibility of risk management with IEEE's Board.

Key Responsibilities


Specific duties include but not limited to:



Develop and manage the strategy and implementation of an integrated framework for identifying, assessing, controlling and monitoring risk.



Facilitate or directly execute risk analysis and assessments across IEEE's business units to achieve strategic initiatives and ensure due diligence, due care, controllership and sound corporate governance.



Direct the activities of the IEEE Risk Identification and Assessment Group (RIAG).



Develop appropriate risk management training for Staff and Volunteers.



Advise and guide managers with the identification, mapping, and management of risks.



Partner with risk owners to ensure that appropriate action is being taken to address / mitigate risks.



Supervise Business Continuity Program Manager in order to safeguard IEEE’s ability to effectively conduct business through the development, maintenance and ongoing improvement of the IEEE’s Business Continuity Program.



Manage Volunteer relationships, and support committees and ad hoc teams.

Technology Skill Set. He or she must be a savvy knowledge worker who seeks out technology solutions to business challenges. Specific technological knowledge and experience needed to produce the desired outcomes include strong computer modeling skills, command of Lotus Notes and association management / business management software, and varied Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Microsoft Project.


Spoken skills. Must possess strong and effective verbal communication skills, and be able to articulate pertinent business issues and concepts to Volunteers, and Staff Senior Management. He or she must be able to readily communicate with business professionals for whom English is a second language.


Presentation skills/size of audiences. Must possess strong and effective presentation skills for audiences that can number up to 100 on occasion. Typical audiences may include the IEEE Board of Directors, several of its standing Committees (i.e.Finance, Insurance, Audit), as well as the Volunteer leasdership of IEEE's technical societies, and the Staff Management Council.


Writing skills. Must possess strong written communication skills in order to prepare reports, recommendations, and requests for action that will be addressed to the IEEE Board, Senior Volunteers and Staff leadership.His or her written communications will include risk analyses, daily e-mail correspondence, performance plans and goals for his/her direct reports. His or her written documents will be read by IEEE elected officials, Volunteers, and Senior Staff managers.


Reading skills. He or she must be able to read, comprehend and apply advanced accounting and financial regulatory documents. He or she must be able to read, comprehend and apply the IEEE Bylaws, Constitution, Policies and practices. Will need to understand and communicate research findings, such as those contained in professional publications


Foreign language skills. Business fluency in a foreign language, especially Mandarin Chinese, French, Spanish, or Hindi will be helpful, but is not required


Because the IEEE is a complex, global organization, he or she must be able to utilize effective interpersonal skills to ensure a financial plan is created that addresses the needs and known constraints of the IEEE enterprise.


Extensive contact with Volunteers, and Staff Senior Management, as well as frequent contact with key staff, business partners and service providers, including insurance brokers / administrators, and other financial institutions.


Must demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism when dealing with sensitive and / or confidential matters.


Must be able to identify and analyze issues and problems, and recommend / implement solutions for matters related to risk management.


Resources available to aid in problem solving include IEEE Bylaws, IEEE Policies, the IEEE Employee Handbook, the IEEE Finance Operations Manual, the IEEE Insurance Committee, and the IEEE Audit Committee.


The position reports to the Senior Director, Financial Services. He/She is expected to work independently while performing the essential functions of this job and in reaching its desired outcomes.

Office positions at IEEE are generally performed within an office environment whose duties are primarily performed behind a desk at an IEEE location. Employees in these positions frequently operate a computer, read and write, and interact with others in person, over the phone, and via other devices. They move about within the facility in which their office is located to access file cabinets, documents, office machinery, and other equipment. They also travel within the facility in which their office is located and to locations outside of the facility, to attend meetings, trainings, events, and other business activities. Persons in these positions frequently lift, carry, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 10 lbs. They also occasionally move objects weighing up to 20 lbs., and sometimes, but rarely, up to 50 lbs.

Persons holding these positions must have strong communication and organizational skills, and an ability to interact and work with others. They must be able to work under time constraints and deadlines.

Work Environment

Persons holding office positions are generally subject to inside environmental conditions having the lighting, temperature, and noise of an open floor-plan office environment.
