The role involves close collaboration with the production team to ensure the designs are feasible, cost-effective, and meet all quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:
Product Design & Development:
  • Design, model, and prototype metal products using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Develop detailed drawings, including technical specifications, tolerances, and material requirements.
  • Create 3D models and simulations to assess functionality, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
Collaboration:
  • Work closely with the manufacturing and production teams to ensure designs are practical and can be produced efficiently in the shop.
  • Liaise with customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and clarify design specifications.
  • Provide support to production teams during the fabrication process by troubleshooting design issues or modifications as required.
Materials and Manufacturing Process Selection:
  • Recommend appropriate materials and fabrication methods (e.g., welding, cutting, stamping, CNC machining) based on product requirements and design considerations.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to determine the best manufacturing processes that minimize cost while ensuring product quality.
Design Validation and Testing:
  • Conduct design reviews, simulations, and testing to validate product functionality and performance.
  • Address design flaws, making necessary adjustments to improve functionality, ease of manufacturing, or cost.
Documentation & Reporting:
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design files, drawings, and revisions.
  • Provide regular progress reports and updates on design status to the project management team.
Continuous Improvement:
  • Suggest and implement design improvements to increase efficiency, reduce material waste, or enhance product durability.
  • Stay updated on the latest trends in metal fabrication technologies and materials to introduce innovative solutions into designs.
