What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substation Engineer position at IKOS GROUP?

As part of this strategic growth, we are currently looking for an Electrical Engineer to join one of our major clients in the renewable energy sector!
Context:
We are looking for a knowledgeable and technically skilled Electrical Engineer with a strong background in HVDC systems to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with HVDC technology, substation design, and power system studies, along with a deep understanding of North American electrical standards and grid codes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate a working understanding of HVDC valve characteristics and their associated control and protection systems.
- Apply comprehensive knowledge of North American high-voltage substation standards and guidelines, including IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC codes, as well as local grid codes.
- Design and engineer substation packages independently, including when customer specifications are incomplete or unavailable.
- Conduct insulation coordination studies and define characteristics for major HVDC equipment.
- Understand civil engineering principles and structural design requirements as they relate to substations.
- Perform relevant design calculations for both primary and secondary systems, such as:
- Battery and DC system component sizing
- Selection of power transformers, circuit breakers, and protection devices
- Control and power cable rating and selection
- Bus, fittings, insulator, arrester selection
- Grounding grid design and lightning protection
- Responsible for leading and coordinating all P&C technical aspects of AC power substation projects, especially ensuring successful and safe operation of power system equipment.
- Contribute technical expertise to HVDC project execution and support field testing and commissioning activities with a strong focus on safety.
- Apply electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills in project environments.
- Utilize AutoCAD and other design tools to support automation and detailed engineering deliverables.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, with coursework in power systems and power electronics.
- Technical experience and interest in power system engineering, especially related to HVDC system studies.
- Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience conducting network or transient studies for HVDC, FACTS, renewable energy systems, or other inverter-based power systems.
- Familiarity with system simulation tools, particularly PSCAD, for HVDC and power system studies.
- Strong computer skills with an aptitude for design software and automation.
