Summary:
Ilitch Sports and Entertainment is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Head Sound Technician at the Fox Theatre. The individual in this position is a member of a close-knit team of stagehands who support the production operations of the Fox. This position is one of the five “house” Head Stagehands as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between The Fox Theatre and I.A.T.S.E. Local #38.
Applicant must have working knowledge of stage technology and procedures. Applicant must be familiar with the safe working procedures of a stage and its related tools and equipment as well as safe working procedures in a production environment.
Essential Functions:
- Operate and maintain all in-house audio equipment (consoles, speakers, subs, monitors, microphones, cables, etc.)
- Must be capable of operating both in-house and rental large-format digital and analog mixing consoles
- Assist with load-in, setup, rehearsal, performance, and load out of presentations.
- Monitor appropriate materials, equipment and supplies as required for production support.
- Collaborate closely with House Steward, internal and external production managers and other artistic programming staff to ensure successful execution of the technical requirements for a variety of events.
- Help lead additional IATSE employees in the audio department for calls.
- Oversee the management, operation and maintenance of house hearing assist system, house clear-com and dressing room paging system.
- Work across departments, as required; within all theatrical disciplines including special events; and attend to a wide range of duties, as assigned.
- Collaborate with the production's touring crew to address, troubleshoot and resolve guest sound complaints.
- Maintain operating spaces, equipment and inventory neatly and in good order.
Education/Experience:
- 5 years of experience in live theatrical sound mixing in a similar environment required.
- Experience with multi-disciplinary art forms required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Substantial experience with a variety of musical and staged attractions in live entertainment venues.
- Proficient in operating internal and external venue audio systems including mixing boards.
- Experienced with patching and stage cabling techniques.
- Demonstrated skills and experience setting and operating sound reinforcement systems, wireless microphone systems, monitor systems, and distributed audio systems for a wide variety of presentations.
- Solid working knowledge of video projection, automation and modern stage technology and procedures.
- Position requires leadership and management skills and the ability to work as a member of a team, supporting each other, to accomplish goals and ability to anticipate potential problems and provide solutions.
- Ability to understand the work and needs of the department, and to anticipate potential problems and provide solutions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships and to interact effectively with a wide range of people across departments.
- Ability to work on elevated platforms, in aerial lifts, and in positions in high places.
- Strong commitment to safety, ensuring compliance with all relevant safety procedures and protocols.
- Detail oriented and highly organized.
- Strong listening and verbal communication skills.
- Computer literate and proficient in MS Office Professional Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Adaptable and able to respond positively, quickly and effectively to shifting priorities and changing needs.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
- Ability to assist in the movement and placement of theatrical objects, including prolonged durations of standing as well as pushing, pulling, and lifting items greater than 50lbs
- Position will require work at heights, on ladders & lifts, and in intermittently noisy spaces - frequent noise above 85 dba
- Work schedule to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position is a full time, hourly position with benefits and PTO.
