This work draws upon innovative best practices developed through the Innovation Zones and other agency projects in order to build a seamless system of supports for children and families in the community. This role is responsible for the outreach, recruitment, enrollment, and community partnership components of the agency’s Early Learning programs, ensuring that programs remain fully enrolled with the most at-risk families and building strong, two-way strategic partnerships for the benefit of program families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following. The organization reserves the right to add to, delete, change or modify the essential duties and responsibilities at any time.

  • Provides training and technical assistance (T/TA) to Maintenance Specialists.

  • Tracks and coordinates the storage of Early Learning inventory.

  • Assists with oversight of large or program-wide maintenance projects including preparing and/or obtaining estimates for material and labor costs of large-scale maintenance projects. Collaborates with Maintenance Specialists in the review of estimates for material and labor costs of all other maintenance projects.

  • Onboards and mentors new Maintenance Specialists. Observes new Maintenance Specialists and provides written and verbal feedback.

  • Routinely checks facilities and grounds and works with Maintenance Specialists to schedule and/or perform preventative maintenance.

  • If needed, performs basic repairs of plumbing leaks or breaks; opens clogged lines and drains; maintains and monitors septic system; and replaces washers and other minor parts.

  • If needed, performs basic rough and finished carpentry including drywall in the construction and repair of structures such as partitions, walls, doors, fences, windows frames, ceiling tiles, office furniture roof and shelves.

  • Removes debris resulting from work, including broken glass, putty, drywall, plastic, etc.

  • Replaces or makes arrangements to fix broken windows and door hardware.

  • If needed, ensures the safety of staff, families and visitors by inspecting walkways and steps during winter months; keeping all areas clear of snow and ice; and placing ice melt where needed.

  • Maintains gardening equipment and provides routine service to power equipment to ensure proper operation and safety.

  • Makes necessary repairs to irrigation systems.

  • Ensures communications with Site Directors when any tools, power tools, or machinery needs to be added, repaired or replaced.

  • Acquires information and develops knowledge of federal, state and local safety and building code requirements related to Head Start/Early Head Start facilities within first month on the job, including, but is not restricted to OSHA and MSDS chemical inventory, "Right to Know" training, Davis-Bacon, etc.

  • Alertly monitors matters of health and safety in all facilities and activities.

  • Takes precautions to protect own health and safety as well as the health and safety of children, families, and staff and to protect equipment and facilities and the Program. Reports any health and safety concerns observed to supervisor.

  • Executes our workplace core capabilities of accountability, customer focus, continuous quality improvement (CQI), communication, competent people and clear priorities.

  • Independently works on multiple tasks effectively in support of department.

  • Other Functions: The organization may assign other functions to the job at its discretion.

EXAMPLES OF GENERAL JOB DUTIES--ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Understands, generates and documents in-kind and other allowable costs applied toward the non-federal share requirement.

  • Attends all workshops and meetings as deemed necessary by the Director, Early Learning Quality Improvement and Site Directors.

  • Attends all required staff and parent meetings and activities.

  • Understands Head Start Performance Standards and local child care licensing regulations.

  • Understands the regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination.

  • Positively promotes Head Start in the community.

  • Maintains strict confidentiality with respect to Head Start/Early Head Start children, families and staff in accordance with established policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED. Associate degree or higher in related field preferred.

  • Seven to ten years relevant experience in areas such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting and ground maintenance functions.

  • Some supervisory experience preferred

This position will work in the southwest suburbs of Chicago at $21.06 per hour plus $1,000 hiring bonus (50% at 90 days of employment and 50% at 1yr of employment). IL Action for Children is EEO/M/F/V/D employer.
