Illinois CancerCare is seeking a full-time Retail Financial Counselor to assist Illinois CancerCare patients in obtaining oral drugs and other medications intended for self-administration through obtaining insurance prior authorizations. The Retail Financial Counselor will screen all patients receiving oral or self-administered medications for financial need and obtain all available assistance.
Pay Range: $17.00 - $28.00 per hour

- Obtain insurance prior authorizations and overrides as needed for all oral and self-administered medications prescribed by Illinois CancerCare providers through third-party online portals, forms, and phone calls.
- Document insurance approvals, enter in notes and communicate with nursing and pharmacists if the insurance requires prescriptions be sent to a specific specialty pharmacy.
- Call insurance companies to troubleshoot issues in processing scripts.
- Call outside pharmacies as requested by patients, nursing, or pharmacists to help track down patient medications/ assist with patient delivery issues.
- Sign all patients with commercial insurance on specialty medications up for manufacturer copay cards if available.
- Meet with patients to help screen all patients receiving specialty medications from a pharmacy for financial need. Apply for grants and manufacturer patient assistance programs (free drug) as available.
- Screen and sign up retail pharmacy patients for Illinois CancerCare financial hardship program and obtain all needed documentation.
- Document assistance obtained for patients each month.
- Track and follow up on patients with approved authorizations and assistance, renewing as needed.
- Maintain sample medication inventory, requesting samples from pharmaceutical representatives as needed and helping coordinate the distribution of samples to patients in need.
- Function as a liaison with other departments as needed (Including nursing and the business office).
- Work with patients to understand Medicare Part D and help them through open enrollment process (without steering to a specific plan).
- Performs other related duties as assigned/requested by Pharmacy Management.
- Additional duties:
- Work additional hours when requested.
- Attend required meetings and participate in committees as requested.
- Report to work area on time and remain available throughout the workday.
- Communicate to outside facilities in a courteous, helpful manner.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Observes OSHA and facility policies and guidelines.
- Clean pharmacy equipment, utensils, and work areas.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Ability to work on a desktop computer and telephone for extended periods of time.
- May require working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS/TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
- Conditions are common to working in a medical office.
- Safety policies and good health practices are to be understood and observed.
- Frequent interaction with patients/caregivers, staff, and physicians.
- Occasional face to face meetings with patients.
TRAINING AND LICENSURE REQUIRED
Current or Application for Illinois Technician License
National Pharmacy Technician Certification or plans to obtain
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED
Two years experience in a retail or specialty pharmacy setting, or in a medical office working with prior authorizations.
