What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technical Director-Performing Arts Center position at Illinois Central College?
The Technical Director is responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of the Performing Arts Center and the Lecture Recital Hall. This includes oversight and execution of lights, sound, load in and set-ups; scenic elements and basic rigging. Events may include: guest artist performances, master classes, recitals, residency artist performances, student theatrical, dance, and music related performances and recitals, and more.

- Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the Main Auditorium, Black Box theatre and the Lecture Recital Hall, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
- Ensure all areas and activities meet, and where possible, exceed professional safety standards.
- In collaboration with PAC management, ABS administration and stakeholders, determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
- Assist faculty and guest designers and directors with production from an operations, technical, and design standpoint.
- Advise production managers and designers on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervise the implementations of approved technical designs.
- Coordinate with production teams, staff, students and other participants for load ins and changeovers, scenic planning (technical drawings-CAD, Q-Lab, etc.), constructions (scene shop oversight) and coordination of staff and student workers/production participants and potential volunteers.
- Assist PAC management in recruiting, training and scheduling of volunteer, student workers and/or paid technical staff for Main Stage, Black Box Theatre, and Lecture Recital hall events.
- Assist with monitoring the condition of facilities spaces and equipment to include but not limited to the scene shop, Green Room, Mainstage, Black Box Theatre, Lecture/Recital Hall, lighting, sound, scenic and rigging equipment which includes overseeing preventive maintenance on equipment arranging for the timely and safe repair and/or replacement within budgetary constraints.
- Assist with the preparation and control of technical and facility budgets including recommendation regarding capital purchases and improvements while maintaining inventory and ordering of specialized supplies and repairs.
- Assist with the design, set up, maintenance and operation of lighting and sound systems for events, productions, and projects as needed.
- Maintain an active presence in the technical and production process of student and public events by regularly attending production meetings and rehearsals to collaborate with the planning and implementation of shop activities and schedules to ensure positive interactions with production team and other stakeholders.
- Required to be present at all Guest Artist Shows to ensure fully trained staff are present and a positive, supervised, and safe experience for all levels of participation (approximately 6 performances a year).
- Supervise student workers and part-time staff.

- Bachelor’s degree in theatre or closely related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of direct experience working in technical theatre capacities such as a stagehand, lighting technician, sound technician, direction or stage management.
- Experience working with CAD and Q-Lab or similar production software.
- Scenic construction and lighting experience.
- Strong computer skills.

- Experience in implementing production calendars, contracts, riders, and facility requests.
- Proficiency in operation, maintenance, and basic repair of production equipment, especially in lighting and sound.
- Experience in blueprint use and the theatrical design and build process.
